Madam Secretary Season 5 Episode 6 involved a diplomatic crisis that was solved mostly at an Icelandic airport overnight.

Elizabeth attends a UN conference in Qatar, where she learns that the Turkish government is 5 billion short of the humanitarian aid it needs to assist Syrian refugees. Thanks to an escalation of the war in Syria, the border is closed, trapping millions of refugees inside, and the Turkish ambassador won't consider reopening the border without the financial aid. Most countries are reluctant to contribute and the US has no budget left.

While heading home, Elizabeth and her staff get stuck at an airport in Ireland because of a volcano that has erupted underneath a glacier. So does the Turkish ambassador and his staff. The US and Turkish staff immediately get into a war over food supplies and electrical outlets, but Elizabeth and the Turkish ambassador talk and begin to become friendly to one another.

Meanwhile, Jay meets a chess player from the Netherlands and they play a few games and flirt. Jay learns that his new girlfriend's Russian opponent cheated in the world chess tournament, info that Elizabeth is able to use to her advantage later.

At home, Henry prepares a speech for the families of deployed soldiers and worries about Alison, who states she doesn't believe in monogamy, relationships, or communication.
