Full Frontal with Samantha Bee: 11 Best Moments So Far

at .

Since the premiere of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee on February 8, 2016, we have become obsessed. We never miss an episode, and we're constantly encouraging our friends and family to watch it as well. Full Frontal with Samantha Bee is a hard-hitting political satire show with the only woman in late night (at least for now)!

She makes us laugh, sometimes makes us cry, and always forces us to think critically about the world around us. Let's take a look at the 11 segments we love the most so far on Full Frontal with Samantha Bee!

1. Cruz 101

Samantha Bee exudes joy as she tells us the story of Ted Cruz and the many people who loathe him. While this whole segment is phenomenal, nothing is better than the footage Full Frontal obtained of a college-aged Ted Cruz starring in a production of The Crucible, lamenting, "WHY am I persecuted?!" This clip became a favorite running gag on the show, and you can bet we quote it regularly.

2. Eddie Eagle

In her earlier months on the air, Samantha Bee took on the National Rifle Association (NRA) in the most incredible way. The NRA has a mascot named Eddie Eagle, and they have strict regulations on who is allowed to own and wear the costume. As you will see from Sam's brilliant investigative piece, these rules are tougher than our country's laws about owning and using guns. The last 45 seconds of this piece are where Bee truly shines, resulting in a moment that had us crying in laughter. It's a piece we love to revist whenever we need a good laugh!

3. Cruz Bows Out

No one loved Ted Cruz more than Samantha Bee. And by that we mean no one loved making fun of Ted Cruz more. Bee was so grateful for his presence in the Republican primaries, and she got some comedic gold out of it. When Cruz dropped out of the race, it only seemed fitting that Bee send him off with a tribute. She enlisted singer Michelle Branch to help, rewriting Branch's song "Goodbye to You" as "Goodbye Ted Cruz." It's simply hilarious. And in case you're wondering, yes, we do have every word memorized.

4. A Totally Real, 100% Valid Theory

People are saying...Trump can't read! Bee brilliantly spoofs Trump's oft-used tactic of implying something is true because unspecified people say so. They have the evidence—so much evidence, the best evidence! Piecing together clips from a Trump deposition with interviews in which he always claims to be reading "All Quiet on the Western Front," Bee created an argument as solid as any of Trump's. This claim, however, doesn't seem too far from the realm of possibility.

5. #passMJIA

*Trigger warning: sexual assault and rape* Samantha Bee's best stories come from her advocating for women and their safety. But as she says in this piece, the Military Justice Improvement Act (MJIA) is not just a women's issue. Men and women in the military are sadly subjected to sexual assault and rape frequently, and they often see no justice against their offenders. So, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) introduced the MJIA to combat sexual assualt and rape in the military.

Bee takes a not-so-funny topic and brings some humor to it with ease. In fact, one of our most quoted moments comes from this segment: "Oh no, oh shit, here come the obstruction twins Fil and Buster, probably wearing their adult diapers so they can block this bill all night." However, the humor injected into the story does not take away from the importance of it. Bee is passionate about the act passing (sadly, it did not), and so are many senators on both sides of the aisle. It's a fantastic piece and one of the most important issues Bee has covered on her show.

6. The Pulse Nightclub Shooting

This piece speaks for itself. Sam takes a more serious approach to this segment, and she does it beautifully. She lays her heartbreak and anger out for us with eloquence, grace, and vulnerability. It's a touching tribute to those who lost their lives on that horrible night, and it's a call for all of us to seek justice for them.

7. Syrian Refugees Parts 1 and 2

During the election, there was a lot of talk about how Syrian refugees should not be allowed into the country. Bee decided to investigate to see how much of what we were hearing from politicians was true. It turns out, a lot of it was false! Hard to believe, right? Bee traveled to Jordan to meet with Syrian refugees. The footage from her trip was so extensive that she split it into two parts on different episodes. Bee interviewed the refugees, putting a human face to political rhetoric. The interviews are as touching as they are illuminating, with plenty of humor thrown in via Bee's American culture lessons ("What is your HBOGO password?"). These clips should be required viewing for anyone who wants to refuse entry to refugees.

8. Full Frontal is Scared: Masha Gessen Edition

Masha Gessen is a Russian-born writer and activist who had to flee her country for speaking out against Vladimir Putin. She has also been a vocal critic of Donald Trump, and Bee interviewed her in January of this year to discuss her take on the election. Gessen is blunt with Bee throughout the interview, saying she fears another Holocaust. This aired on January 18, before Trump's inauguration, and Gessen predicted a number of things we have already seen happen, such as restricting the press from the White House and inciting wars. Gessen's work is vital, and we need to heed her warnings. It's not Bee's funniest moment, but it is one you cannot miss.

9. Not the White House Correspondents' Dinner: Woman in the High Castle

Samantha Bee's Not the White House Correspondents' Dinner was held in April of this year, and we were lucky enough to attend. The event was held in Washington, D.C. to raise money for the Committee to Protect Journalists, and it even won Samantha Bee and her writing team their first Emmy Award. Some highlights included an appearance from Allison Janney as CJ Cregg (her character on The West Wing), Will Ferrell as President George W. Bush, and this Man in the High Castle-inspired piece.

In it, she imagines what life would be like if Hillary Clinton was president. It even features her hosting the actual White House Correspondents' Dinner, something everyone predicted she would do if Clinton had won the election. It's a sentimental and heartbreaking piece. Being in the room when this piece was shown was a sobering flashback to the night of November 8, 2016, when we realized that the future would not be what we expected. Bee wasn't the only one who teared up; we certainly didn't have dry eyes as we watched what should have been.

10. Ladies Who Book: Ivanka Trump

Alexa, quit ruining feminism! Bee reviews Ivanka Trump's book to spare us from reading it, and she lays out the reasons why Ivanka's version of feminism is far from intersectional. Perhaps trying to be inclusive, Ivanka includes quotations from authors of color, but she puts them in shudder-inducing racist contexts. On a ligher note, the most delightful mometn of this segment comes as Bee highlights Ivanka's penchant for using architect as a verb, leading to an inspiring new motto courtesy of the Full Frontal graphics team: Life like nobody's architecting.

11. Kris Kobach's Racist Music Man

Recently, Bee and her team used an ambitious musical number to criticize Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach and his position on Trump's Election Integrity Commission. In her "Racist Music Man," she is joined by Broadway's current Hamilton Javier Muñoz. They explain how Kobach went to small towns to pass hateful anti-immigration legislation at the local level that left these places in economic ruin. Bee and her ensemble sing and dance their way through a musical number that certainly leaves us scared of this so-called Election Integrity Commission.
