The Vampire Diaries Season Premiere: 9 Things to Know

at .  Updated at .

Simply put, The Vampire Diaries Season 7 Episode 1 is terrific.

We were fortunate enough to catch an early screening of the premiere and it sets up the Heretics as dangerously intriguing new villains; it plays with time in fascinating fashion; it pays homage to Elena without focusing too much on her absence; and it takes the series in a new, interesting direction.

Trust us: October 8 cannot arrive quickly enough. You're gonna love it.

Without giving too much away (still: SPOILER ALERT), here are a handful of teases and tidbits in regard to The Vampire Diaries Season 7 premiere:

1. Where/When Are We?!?

The premiere opens with a major time jump... and also a major location jump. Prepare to be very confused. (But that's the idea.)

2. A Groom in Mourning

Alaric will react to the murder of Jo in very surprising fashion. And, no, we don't mean simply by getting drunk with Damon.

3. The Finale, Revisited

We revisit the Season 6 finale scene in which Matt is driving around Mystic Falls and Damon is standing on the clocktower. We learn exactly what led up to these events.

4. Choosing a Side

When it comes to his loyalties, Enzo will choose a side between the Heretics and his friends in Mystic Falls.

5. All the Feelings!

Two people will kiss. Two people will hold hands in public for the first time. One character will be elevated to "best friend" status by another. Prepare for all the feels, fans.

The Vampire Diaries Season 7 Episode 1 Quotes

Dear Diary, I'm in Hell. It's hard to imagine a place worse than where I've come from but by some spectacular miracle, I've found it. In the weeks since I've arrived, three things are clear. The food is literally made of poison, the air smells like a plague, and everyone wants to know what everyone else is doing. I don't fit in here. The world is not what I imagined.

Valerie

Stefan: New rule. You live your life, you heal, and in the meantime, we're friends.
Caroline: I like that rule.
