Charlie Sheen Confirms HIV Diagnosis

Charlie Sheen appeared Tuesday morning on The Today Show, sat across from Matt Lauer and confirmed a rumor that has been floating around about him for days:

"I am, in fact, HIV positive," the former Two and a Half Men star told the host.

Sheen said he received the shocking news about four years ago, following a series of night sweats and health issues that made him think he had a "brain tumor."

Why is he coming out with this difficult truth now?

Because Sheen says he's been blackmailed and extorted by both those close to him and also by prostitutes he brought into his life in the months and years since his diagnosis.

"I have to put a stop to this onslaught, this barrage of attacks and of sub-truths and very harmful and mercurial stories that are about me, threatening the health of so many others, which couldn't be further from the truth."

Sheen went on to say he HAS had unprotected sex since learning of his health status, but that it's "impossible" for any partners to have contracted the disease.

He also says he's told each one of his partners about his HIV prior to intercourse. No exceptions.

Does he now believe those negative attacks and those "shakedowns" are over? Yes.

"I think I've released myself from prison," Sheen said.
