The Code Sneak Peek: The Few, The Proud, The Lawyers

at .

A series spotlighting military attorneys prosecuting and defending servicemen accused of crimes.

Nope, it's not JAG, originally envisioned as a blend of Top Gun and A Few Good Men.

That courtroom drama aired for a decade, for one season on NBC before moving to CBS for the rest of its run, making stars of David James Elliott and Catherine Bell.

It even spawned a franchise which has been a CBS mainstay since then, NCIS. Maybe you've heard of it.

The Brightest Minds -- Tall - The Code Season 1 Episode 2

No, this new series being described is The Code. It debuts behind, you guessed it, NCIS at 9 tonight on CBS before moving to 9 p.m. Mondays starting April 15, taking over the Magnum P.I. slot.

The Code features a team of Marine lawyers who prosecute and defend Marines accused of crimes while in the service.

The unit, based in the Judge Advocate General's office at Quantico, is commanded by Col. Glenn Turman (portrayed by Dana Delany), one of the highest-ranked female officers in JAG. She demands excellence both from herself and her subordinates and commands respect from her staff.

Delany's character name is in part an homage to John Glenn, the former Marine, astronaut, and Senator.

Legal Strategy - The Code Season 1 Episode 1

Col. Turman has a dependable second-in-command in Major Troy Ferry (Ato Essando), a steady but fierce prosecutor.

He has his hands full with the office maverick, Captain John "Abe" Abraham (Luke Mitchell), who comes from a long Marine tradition but is headstrong and driven.

JAG Reunion

The defense is led by Captain Maya Dobbins (Anna Wood), who is passionate about defending her clients but who also wants justice to prevail.

Rounding out the staff are Lt. Harper Li (Phillipa Soo, Hamilton), an ambitious young lawyer, and tech-savvy Warrant Officer Rami Ahmadi (Raffi Barsoumian).

The pilot just shows viewers glimpses into the characters' personalities, so it's too early to tell which ones might break out.

But it does promise topical, complex cases. A private is tried for stabbing and killing his commanding officer, a friend of Abe's, in front of a half-dozen witnesses.

But it turns out that Marine suffers from traumatic brain injury and that it was ignored by the base's medical staff. So its chief medical officer ends up on trial as well.

The clip below offers a sample of what viewers can expect from The Code. Then come back to TV Fanatic afterward for a review.
