CW President Teases The Vampire Diaries Spin-Off

Dawn Ostroff is the President of Entertainment of The CW Television Network.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she talked about the future of various shows, including a possible spin-off of The Vampire Diaries. Excerpts from the conversation are below:

Why has The Vampire Diaries been so successful? Great writing, great casting, a topic that's in the zeitgeist and a known franchise is always what we look for. It's the perfect example of the kind of qualities we stress in every show we pick up.

Might there be a spin-off? Hopefully in a few years.

Will One Tree Hill be renewed? We're encouraged. We think [Creator] Mark Schwahn has done a great job with the show. The fans are the most loyal and dedicated I think I've ever seen. They have some 1.6 million fans on Facebook. Creatively, we feel the show is in a really good place.

On low ratings for Gossip Girl and 90210: I wouldn't say they haven't done as well. You have to realize that you have a lot of people time-shifting our shows and watching in different ways. Mondays have been particularly tough this year -- it has become more competitive. 90210 creatively is light years away from where it was last year. Sometimes that show is watched more on DVR than live.

Will Smallville remain on Fridays next season? Viewers have not only followed it, but have endorsed the show creatively. I think it's too early too tell [where it will go], but it's been doing well on Fridays.

Vampire Diaries Quotes

You want a love that consumes you. You want passion and adventure, and even a little danger... I want you to get everything you're looking for. But for right now, I want you to forget that this happened. Can't have people knowing I'm in town yet. Goodnight, Elena.

Dear Elena, yes you heard that correctly. Hell has frozen over. I'm writing it all down. Granted, I'm half a bottle in thanks to my 1950 Chateau Cheval Blanc, a bottle I waited 65 years to open. I used to spend nights sitting in my wine cellar convincing myself I could hear it age, tannins growing, fermenting, but appreciating its beauty didn't make time go by any faster. The bottle just laid there on its shelf, torturing me while I waited for Katherine and time stood still. Eventually I convinced myself that no sip of that wine could ever taste as good as I dreamt it would. And that is the story of why I drink bourbon. I don't know who I am without you, but I know that as long as I'm with you, time will stand still. So who is Damon Salvatore without Elena Gilbert? A selfish friend, a jealous brother, a horrible son? Or maybe with a little luck, I'll do right by you. Because you may be a thousand miles away or a hundred years away, but you're still here with me and my heart is right there in that coffin with you. Until you come back to me.
