Once Upon a Time Season 5 Episode 4 Review: The Broken Kingdom

at .  Updated at .

Who do you trust was the theme of Once Upon a Time Season 5 Episode 4 as loyalty and love were called into question at every turn.

Arthur mentioned that Merlin speaks in half truths. Perhaps they should just leave the old wizard in a tree as his predictions appear to do more harm than good.

The King of the Round Table certainly appeared to have his own dark side, as he lied to and manipulated new friends while magically drugging his own wife to do his bidding. Sometime it’s difficult to tell who the good guys are on this show.

The time jumps in this episode became confusing as so many of them took place within the realm of Camelot, but there were definitely a few highlights.

Tops on that list would be Hook and Emma. He swore he’d never give up on her…on them and how can you not love a scene with the two of them sharing a romantic kiss in a field of flowers. Talk about idyllic. Unfortunately it was the polar opposite of what was taking place back in Storybrooke where Emma had succumbed to being the Dark One.

Another sweet moment was when Hook and Emma realized that Henry was falling for Violet. Hook looked positively delighted for Henry…

Hook: You can hide buried treasure or a winning poker hand but you cannot hide the bloom of first love.
Emma: Yes, he has a crush and he straight up lied to my face and I'm the Dark One.
Hook: You're his mother.
Emma: Which is scarier.
Hook: To him? That's up for debate.

Back at the castle, David and Mary Margaret had quite the argument about whom to trust. I was glad they later admitted the fight was real because if not that was a heck of an act. But I was incredibly relieved to find they had come up with a plan together to figure out whether to trust Lancelot or Arthur.

It was hard not to laugh at this Once Upon a Time quote when David called out Arthur on his manipulations…

You tried to trick me with a catchy title and a comfy chair.

David

Much like Mary Margaret, I was wondering if David had been lured in by the power and glory of the round table. I was so happy to see that wasn’t the case.

I felt sorry for Guinevere. She loved Arthur, and he’d betrayed her in the worst way possible. I hope to see him get his comeuppance some time in the near future, preferably at Guinevere’s hand.

The only disappointment was that there wasn’t nearly enough Regina and Robin in this hour, but Regina still managed to get a great line about David and Mary Margaret’s survival…

Those two can outlive a cockroach.

Regina

Next week it appears we’ll be back in Storybrooke where the Dark One will use Merida to turn Rumplestiltskin brave. Good luck with that.

Check in later this week to see what our Once Upon a Time round table team has to say about this episode and then on Sunday for our review of Once Upon a Time Season 5 Episode 5.
