Iron Fist Season 2 Episode 10 Review: A Duel of Iron

On Iron Fist Season 2 Episode 10, Colleen takes her rightful place as the Iron Fist and everyone forges new beginnings.
The ten-episode season has finally drawn to a close, and boy, a lot happened in the last episode.
The new showrunner M. Raven Metzner finally proved that he and Marvel were, in fact, willing to take an extremely drastic deviation from the comics and essentially retcon Colleen to be a descendant of Iron Fist.
A move of this scale is unprecedented in the Marvel television world, even with the retconning in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Skye becoming Quake.
This is virtually changing the landscape of the Iron Fist world as we know it. The Iron Fist is no longer the male-dominated, potentially appropriative cultural icon that the comics make it out to be.
With Colleen being the first descendant of the original Iron Fist, the show essentially retconned the Iron Fist mythology back to being Asian.
They kept me in a concrete box, Joy. And took me out to question me. More often rape me. Torture me. Make me watch while they killed the rest of my squad. And then, after 22 months, I was freed. I always thought Mary convinced someone to get her out. And she thought I fought my way out. Well, we were both wrong.

There’s a lot of retconning going on here, but they were all rather smart moves given the lukewarm reception to Danny. Plus, the season proved that it wasn’t wasting time with Colleen’s heirloom and in fact brought in pieces of the last season, such as her precious ancestral katana and family crest.

It seems tough for Marvel to incorporate an authentic approach to Asian mythology on this show, and I still don’t think that’s the direction to be taking. However, there’s a lot of potential in exploring actual characters in Colleen’s past, given that she is Asian and her ancestors are Asian are also possibly from K’un-L’un.
I used to maintain a very formulaic approach to enjoying television — the same number of episodes, the same characters, not deviating from the structure built into the show.
However, I’ve quickly discovered that I (and audiences at large) are usually satisfied with anything as long as the story is good. It’s all about the story.
Misty: Last time I saw Luke, I did not like what I saw. And now you've got one of the few weapons that might make a dent in that man. You got my number. Use it.
Colleen: Same goes for you.
Iron Fist could hypothetically be done with Colleen’s story — Danny has stepped away and he no longer has the fist. He’s also learned a lot and has definitely changed, making him a much more likable and respectable character.

A certain amount of the story shows that even though it might be his show, it’s possible that it’s not really his story. However, the last few minutes of the show betray that he’s still going to be at least some part of the show, even if that part is not officially determined yet or how the plot will proceed from here.
As Iron Fist leaned into Colleen’s story and background as well as Jessica Henwick’s presence onscreen, it just simply became more and more engaging. (To top it off, no one’s going to deny that her fist lighting up the already bright white katana just felt so right.)
More and more I’m beginning to hope that Iron Fist does not have a third season and instead a Daughters of the Dragon show is picked up. The hints were being dropped right in front of our faces, especially with Misty’s line about “Nightwing” having a certain ring to it. (For those unfamiliar with the comics, maybe it’s clever, but the show is pretty much rubbing it in our faces at this point).
Walker: It's not over between us, Joy.
Joy: Don't I get a say in that?
Walker: That's one of the things I love most about you is your sense of humor.
Nevertheless, a separate show seems unlikely and probably impossible given all of the loose ends introduced at the end of this episode, but one can hope.
As long as Colleen doesn’t become an antagonist, we’re good — although it could be particularly interesting if Danny were to become an antagonist.
There were no answers to why Davos had two fists — and now Danny does? There was definitely something that happened in Asia.

In many ways, I’m wondering if that’s just something that Metzner throughout there to deal with next season. With the showrunner switchover last season who knows what will happen to the next season, but given the more positive reception, he’s likely to stay on board.
Chance always looks like fate in the taillights.

This season was in no way perfect — the antagonist wasn’t particularly engaging and Danny’s growth continued to feel stilted. Nevertheless, it did prove that Iron Fist has potential to grow into an interesting Marvel show, especially with Colleen helming in a way that makes K’un-L’un and many of the more mythical, comic book-ish parts of the original material more believable.
