The 100 may be ending, but the show might go on. 

Deadline is reporting that a prequel set 97 years before the events of the regular series is in the works at The CW. 

Even more intriguing is that viewers will be introduced to the world of the potential series during The 100 Season 7. 

 A backdoor pilot will air during the upcoming seventh and final season of the series. 

The potential series will be penned by Jason Rothenberg, the showrunner of the current series. 

It would pick up in the immediate aftermath of the nuclear apocalypse, and follow “a band of survivors on the ground as they learn to cope in a dangerous world while fighting to create a new and better society from the ashes of what came before.”

It's certainly an intriguing concept and one that will probably go down well with longtime fans of the original series. 

The 100 has been a reliable performer for the network ever since it debuted in 2014. 

When it ends, it will do so at 100 episodes, bringing the series full circle. 

The decision to end the regular series was revealed in August, with Rothenberg tweeting the following:

"With #The100 Season 6 finale just days away, I have some bittersweet news to share: Season 7 will be our last," he tweeted.

"We are eternally grateful to WB & CW for always allowing us to tell our story the way we want to & to wrap the show on our terms. What an incredible ride this has been!"

The CW later confirmed the news at TCA. 

"Jason Rothenberg has said to us a number of times that he wanted to end with the seventh season. He has other ideas he wants to do and thought this was the right way to go," CW president Mark Pedowitz said Sunday. 

"We've been very good about listening to showrunner creators about when it's the right time to end the series."

It's not uncommon for CW to want to spinoff concluding shows. A spinoff of Arrow is currently in the works, while Legacies is a spinoff of both The Vampire Diaries and The Originals.
