Caroline has lost her mother and everyone else has lost a friend.
On The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 15, as everyone prepares to say goodbye, Caroline assigns tasks to all of her friends and then begins to deal with her new reality – one that no longer includes her mother.
There's no coming back from this one, either. That's not something that happens very often and, as the Sheriff said, she can have some solace knowing she is one of the few people to have died from natural causes in Mystic Falls!

Liz Forbes considered Damon her best friend and in The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 14, when he shared with her his story about his own mother's passing and walking away before ever delivering the eulogy, she asked him to deliver hers.
This time, Damon is up for the honorable task, but it's not without consequences. He will offer Caroline some advice on dealing with such a tremendous loss, but it will bring up painful memories of his own mother in the process.
Damon has done horrible things in his very long life. Perhaps having and losing a friend such as Sheriff Elizabeth Forbes will have a positive impact on him going forward.
