Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is an incredibly fun and cleverly written musical comedy in its freshman season over on The CW.
Best Theme Song Revival
Theme songs seem to have really fallen by the wayside on television nowadays, but Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has brilliantly brought them back into style with a fun animated description of the show and a little reminder that “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” is a totally sexist term.
Best Guest Star – Dr. Phil
Having Dr. Phil on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend seemed to make a lot of sense, but it was the way in which they used him that we really loved. Dr. Phil guided Rebecca through her depression, offering her REAL advice that she needed to hear, and even stayed with her through her Alice in Wonderland inspired mystery pill haze. After the Dr. Phil in her head finally helped her see that she needed real therapy, the REAL Dr. Phil sent her right back to square one when he mistook Becks and Josh Chan for a couple at the Boba Tea stand. Way to go Dr. Phil.
Rebecca’s Craziest Moment
Rebecca wanted to be BFF’s with Valencia. She took her yoga class, she helped her find a place to open her own studio, and they bonded over a nice bottle of wine. That all went REALLY well, but it wouldn’t stay that way for long. Becks dialed up the intensity when she decided to buy a matching dress as Valencia and kissed her on the dance floor of the club Spider’s. (Yes, there was a Mr. Spider at the end, so it was the correct usage.)
Character Who NEEDS More Screen Time – Darryl Whitefeather
Darryl Whitefeather is a 1/8 Chippewa, a guy who loves Luna bars, and a loving dad (but not in a creepy way.) His one-liners are so well placed and his pop-up appearances always leave us laughing out loud, so why haven’t we seen more of him? Can Becks spend a little more time at work Facebook stalking Josh Chan so that we get more face time with Darryl?
Most Emotional Music Moment
When Greg sat down at the piano and started to sing, we expected a “Piano Man,” type of number. What we didn’t expect was how emotional the lyrics to “What’ll It Be?” would be. Greg sang his heart out about being stuck in West Covina and how it feels to serve food and drinks to the kids you went to high school with as your dreams pass you by. It resonated deeply with viewers because it really hit home for many.
Moment That Made Us All Shout, “WHY?!”
Rebecca and Greg were having a lovely taco date. Rebecca was finally making healthy choices. She had a nice porta-potty revelation that led her to decide that Greg was pretty great. She also got really scared and ended up hooking up with hipster guacamole guy. We all yelled, “WHY?!” collectively. At least she made him wear two condoms.
Biggest Laugh Out Loud Song – Please Don’t Be a Murderer
When Rebecca tries her hand at on-line dating, she doesn’t do a very good job of keeping things casual. To her credit, her first date was with a guy who couldn’t keep his hands off of his balls. (Get your mind out of the gutter! They were exersize balls for his fingers…he was a big gamer.) Her song about hooking up with a stranger was completely funny, but also completely accurate. When we go on blind dates, we too hope that our sexy strangers don’t end up being murderers.
Craziest BFF – Paula Proctor
Paula Proctor might be the world’s best sidekick, and also the world’s worst sidekick. She’s got her BFF Rebecca’s back when it comes to hilarious stakeouts outside of Josh’s house and helping her throw interesting (?) parties. But she doesn’t always offer the best advice to the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. She’s so Team Josh that she doesn’t see other great love prospects in her pseudo-daughter’s life. But we’ll give her a pass, since she’s super loyal and always armed with doughnuts.
Most Surprising Moment We Were Surprisingly Okay With
Listen, we want Rebecca to take off her Chan-goggles and see how great Greg is too. But when Greg brought Heather home with him for Christmas, something about their chemistry felt oddly perfect. After they bonded, Heather totally decided to plant a big ol’ smooch on Greg. It was totally unexpected but really great. Heather definitely isn’t settling and that’s what makes it so awesome!
Romance That Seems Totally Doomed
Poor Josh. All he wants to do is find the right table to…sit at? Yeah, we still don’t totally get that analogy either, but Josh sure does deserve better than Valencia. His family hates her. His friends hate her. We can’t say we’re crazy about her either, but at least she’s hilariously entertaining to watch! Josh is totally realizing that Rebecca is also a great table, so it’ll be fun to see which table Josh ends up…sitting at?
Best Fictional Place to Work
Josh Chan works at Aloha Tech, the coolest place to check out the latest in tech…and feel like you just took a trip to Hawaii, complete with poke. Where do we sign up to get a job here? Or just to get a lei and some poke samples and you know, check out the tech? We’ll inevitably just go buy on it Amazon, cause everyone knows it’s cheaper there, but still…that atmosphere is too good to pass up. The creator of this fictitious company deserves a big high-five.
Best Musical Number…So Far
“The Sexy Gettin’ Ready Song” appeared all the way back in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 1 Episode 1 and has remained the most talked-about song of the series. It SUCKS to be a girl and to get ready to go out. No one understands how real the struggle is; with the exception of Rachel Bloom who brilliantly described and portrayed it to a T. Spanx… am I right?
Season 1 MVP…So Far
We want Rebecca to be happy and find a way to curb her crazy. We love Rebecca. She’s great at her job, she’s smart, and she never fails to leave us laughing. But it’s Greg, the guy she keeps passing over who has completely stolen our hearts. Yeah, he started out as the sad dude who Rebecca met at the bar and sadly made out with all night while looking for Josh Chan.
But the more we learn about this guy, the more we’re rooting for him to get a win. He’s got a sick dad he takes care of, he gave up his savings for school to pay for medical bills, and Rebecca keeps disappointing him. We’re looking forward to seeing SOMETHING good happen to Greg in the second half of the season! He really, really needs it.
