Butterfly is a character-rich spy thriller and family drama that features complex relationships in the world of global espionage.
Daniel Dae Kim leads this thrilling spy series, while fan favorite Piper Perabo also stars as a rival.
Butterfly drops next month, and here is everything we know about the series, including the stars, the plot, the release date, and the official trailer.
Who Are the Creators Behind Butterfly?
Ken Woodruff (The Mentalist) is the showrunner and co-creator, along with acclaimed novelist Steph Cha.
The above are also executive producers along with leading man Daniel Dae Kim and author Arash Amel. BOOM! Studios and Kim’s 3AD Studios were also involved in the development of the series.
Kim teased that showrunners Stephanie Cha and Ken Woodruff had created some compelling characters, and it was even more special having it filmed in Korea.
In a press release about the series, Kim commented on how much he loved the collaboration.
“Butterfly is the realization of a longtime dream to bring together American and Korean storytellers and create a show that bridges two cultures that I love deeply,” said Kim.
“I couldn’t be happier with the creative team we’ve assembled, both in front of and behind the camera, and I’m grateful to Ken Woodruff, BOOM! Studios, 3AD, Amazon, and everyone else who helped bring it to life.”
Kitao Sakurai directed the first two episodes of Butterfly.
What is Butterfly About?
Butterfly is based on the Butterfly graphic novel, which was created by Arash Amel, written by Margaret Bennett, and published by BOOM Studios in 2015. The comic focuses more on Rebecca’s point of view as she delves into her missions.
She trusts no one because she believes she was orphaned as a young teenager, so she now guards her heart and has become closed off until a mission leads her to her estranged father’s doorstep.
Prime Video’s version suggests that it’s David Jung, played by Daniel Dae Kim, since he’s an operative whose life comes back to haunt him because of a past decision.
The synopsis also teased that Rebecca was assigned to kill him by Caddis, a sinister spy organization. That’s likely the organization that Juno (Perabo) and Oliver (Louis Landou) run.
When her father returns to protect her after she starts to follow in his footsteps, she has to make her hardest decision. Does she trust the father she thought had abandoned her, or does she complete the mission, which could make her lose him again?
Complex father-and-daughter relationships can be entertaining, especially when they’re forced to work together to avoid other enemies.
When Will Butterfly Premiere?
The series drops all of the episodes on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, on Prime Video.
Who’s In the Butterfly Cast?
Daniel Dae Kim stars as David Jung, a former U.S. operative living in South Korea.
Reina Hardesty portrays Rebecca, a young agent assigned to kill David Jung.
Piper Perabo stars as Juno, an intelligent woman who craves money and power to succeed. She’s the CEO of an intelligence agency and has a complex relationship with her adult son, who also works for her.
Louis Landau as Oliver, a brilliant, intelligent operative. He has a strong desire to succeed and earn the approval that his controlling mother withholds.
Sean Dulake plays Hollis, June’s (Perabo) right-hand man, and oversees the staff at her private intelligence firm.
Kim Ji-hoon plays Gun, a brutally effective hitman who relishes the chance to take on a renowned agent like David Jung (Kim).
Charles Parnell plays Senator George Dawson, the politician hired to investigate Juno’s intelligence firm.
Sung Dong-il guest stars as Dootae Kim, David Jung’s formidable father-in-law.
Lee Il-hwa plays his wife and Jung’s mother-in-law.
How Many Butterfly Episodes Will There Be?
Unlike most of the series on Prime Video, Butterfly will have a six-episode season instead of the typical eight episodes. If the series is well-received, it can last several seasons.
Nowadays, most streaming series fall between six and ten episodes per season. While this is a bit shorter, hopefully, there will be enough episodes to flesh out the characters and entice the viewers to return.
Is There a Butterfly Trailer?
Good news! Prime Video released the official trailer on Monday, July 14. It featured complex family relationships and non-stop action.
Daniel Dae Kim will delight fans with his fight moves as David Jung, the former U.S. Intelligence operative, who returns to find himself the prime target of Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), his estranged daughter.
Fans of Alias will likely enjoy this, as the trailer has already piqued my interest in learning more about their relationship and whether David can convince Rebecca to collaborate with him, forming an unbeatable duo.
Piper Perabo also shines, portraying a forbiddable opponent. She wants to take David Jung out, and if she can’t use his daughter, she’ll use her son Oliver instead.
Butterfly is jam-packed with complex family drama, treachery, and skilled fight scenes. You don’t want to miss it.
