The past few episodes of St. Denis Medical Season 2 have been fine.
But this week’s episode was an absolute delight.
Although there were several storylines and moving parts, they all worked together to create a chaotic atmosphere that was perfect for the sitcom’s silly shenanigans, making it so lovable.
The introduction of a new, one-off character who changed the workplace atmosphere was definitely the shake-up the show needed to stay fresh.
Additionally, we finally get to see Matt and Serena’s storyline progress after the premiere teased more of their will-they-won’t-they dynamic in St. Denis Medical Season 2.
From Bruce finally meeting his match and Joyce trying to prove her love for Stevie Wonder, let’s dive into this week’s St. Denis episode!
Matt Gets Emotional
If you’ve been keeping up with the reviews for this show, you’ll know that I’m particularly fond of Matt as a character.
He gets a chance to be in the spotlight this episode when he makes it his mission to help a patient with a rare case of narcolepsy triggered by an emotional reaction.
Though Serena calls him a “tryhard” and struggles to understand why he’s going out of his way to do something he isn’t responsible for, it’s one of the few times we get to see her softer side.
This storyline really illustrates how Matt can help bring down Serena’s trademark cynicism, which is exactly what makes their dynamic so fun to watch.
The best part is the reveal that the cause of the patient’s emotional distress is his crush on his roommate, Jeff.
While Serena gives the patient advice about confessing his crush, it’s clear that she’s unknowingly revealing how she feels about Matt.
Also, the moment when Matt says that he thinks being “gay” triggered the narcolepsy got a great laugh out of me (I love when sitcoms have LGBTQ+ representation!).
Never Work With Your Heroes
While getting to work with your mentor again might sound like a dream to many, for Alex, it turns out to be a nightmare.
At first, Pam seems like a great addition to the team with her no-nonsense attitude, especially since she took Bruce down a notch and she’s one of the few people who has been able to do so successfully.
Getting to see Bruce humbled after several episodes of him nurturing his ego is admittedly satisfying.
But over time, it becomes more evident that she’s just plain cruel.
It’s tough watching Alex make excuses for Pam’s behavior and justifying her snide remarks as a desire to make people at the hospital better at their jobs.
However, there’s immeasurable satisfaction in seeing her stand up to her mentor and defend the people she cares for.
Alex is rarely shown to get furious, so her outward anger towards Pam really demonstrates how important it is to her to protect her staff.
Furthermore, it proves that she’s the perfect person for her job, as she’s willing to do whatever it takes to ensure the hospital succeeds, even if it means confronting someone she admires.
Don’t Take Stevie Away!
One of the most unexpected storylines of the series is Joyce trying to prove that she’s a big Stevie Wonder fan.
Even though the plotline’s premise sounds a little outlandish, the execution is surprisingly excellent.
Watching both Joyce and Ron try to die on a hill that nobody’s ever tried to die on before is hilarious, especially since both go to great lengths to prove their side of the argument.
Of course, their argument isn’t actually about Stevie dying but rather about Joyce’s fear of death and being remembered after she dies.
Compared to the other stories in this episode, this one is more morbid, but it’s also the easiest to laugh at, providing some much-needed comic relief despite the emotional topic.
Overall, this episode offers so many great moments and contains everything that makes St. Denis Medical such a special sitcom.
The wait until next week to see how Matt and Serena’s romance progresses is going to feel like forever!
