I’m excited about Boston Blue in many ways, but the Sean/Jonah stories need some help.
Some fans love the bromance between these two, and I get that, but what the heck is with these two rookies wandering the streets of Boston doing silly things?
This isn’t working for me, and I don’t think it puts the real Boston PD in a good light to have these types of stories.
Sean and Jonah Have Had One Silly Story After Another
Their first story together was acceptable, or at least, it was a typical cop show story.
Lena and Danny both advised their family members to try to be the team leader, so the guys kept butting heads and didn’t work well together.
After that was settled, the two of them ended up with goofy cases, like going on a scavenger hunt to find a missing person.
Every one of their escapades leaves me scratching my head while Danny invariably annoys Sean by suggesting he’s not doing this cop thing right. Enough already!
I Want Boston Blue To Continue Blue Bloods’ Tradition of Showing Cops Realistically
Blue Bloods was unlike any other show on TV for many reasons, but one was its commitment to showing the NYPD in a fair and mostly positive light.
I didn’t always agree with that perspective, but it was refreshing to have it, because most TV shows don’t go there, and I had hoped that Boston Blue would continue that tradition with the Boston PD.
So far, though, it hasn’t fully succeeded because of this nonsense with these two rookies.
I find myself wondering after every one of their stories where the heck their supervisor was.
I’ve never been a cop, but I’m confident that most real police precincts don’t turn rookies loose on the neighborhood without any instruction on what they are supposed to be doing or feedback on their jobs.
In fact, we had a show called Rookie Blue, starring FBI‘s Missy Peregrym, and it included a roll call every day where patrol officers got their assignments.
It was Canadian, but still, I doubt it’s that much different in America.
The Sean/Jonah stories don’t come off as realistic, and many viewers have flagged the idea of two rookies working together rather than each being paired with a more seasoned officer who can show them the ropes.
These Characters Deserve To Be More Than Comic Relief
I try not to compare Boston Blue to Blue Bloods — some aspects will be very different, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Still, I can’t help remembering that we knew Sean for 14 years before this latest incarnation.
Sure, he was somewhat impulsive, but he wasn’t like this.
And he also is a legacy character at this point.
Sean deserves real stories. The idea of him butting heads with Danny because Danny’s physical proximity makes it harder for him to be independent is a good one, but it doesn’t need this unrealistic nonsense as part of it.
