Is it even parenthood if your children don’t make you feel guilty about everything?
It’s something that most parents can relate to, and on It’s Not Like That, Malcolm and Lori are always feeling the pressure.
We had the privilege of scoring an exclusive sneak peek of Sunday’s all-new episode, and guilt is certainly on the table, or rather counter, as these two best friends confide in each other about their kids.
The Jeffries and Soto families are going through some tough transitions, and the kids feel like they’re experiencing the brunt of it.
They’re not hiding the fact that they hold their parents responsible for some things, either.
Malcolm has a tough time deciding whether to start packing away some of his late wife’s things. He thinks he’s ready for that, and he tells Lori as much.
It’s part of the grieving process, and everyone takes these steps in their own time, but that’s also part of the problem.
The kids are still deep in the throes of their grief. We saw during the It’s Not Like That series premiere that their mother’s absence is still heavily felt and that each of the kids is clinging to things that make them feel close to their mother.
Justin went out of his way to make a homemade recipe that Jenny used to make, solely to feel closer to her.
We also saw that Flora didn’t want to cut her hair, largely because it was a special ritual she shared with her mother.
We’ve yet to really see how Pen is struggling beyond the fact that she’s burrowing herself into new friendships, but there are likely some things about her mother that she’s clinging to as well.
Based on the clip, it seems Malcolm is ready to let some of these things go and move forward a bit, but his kids are resistant to these gestures and feel he’s moving on too fast.
In the clip, Malcolm finds himself sitting beside his best friend and confidant, Lori, as they catch up over coffee to discuss their issues.
He’s willing to acknowledge that one of the reasons he’s at a different point in his grieving process is that he knew about Jenny’s cancer well before the kids did and had time to make peace with her loss.
It’s an important distinction to make. But he also muses that going through Lori’s things may be good for the kids, cathartic, even.
But all the kids think is that Malcolm is trying to “erase her.”
Lori isn’t going through the same scenario, but she does offer Malcolm some support by sharing that her kids aren’t too fond of her right now either.
Their primary issue is that they’re tired of Lori making them spend time with David.
It seems they’re still not handling the divorce well, and they’re not fond of spending time with the parent they seem to blame for it.
It may have to do with the synopsis stating that Lori and David are trying a new living arrangement.
We know David got a new apartment, and the kids weren’t too keen on helping him settle in.
One has to wonder if they’ll attempt to do that living arrangement where the parents rotate who gets to stay in the house so the kids don’t have to shuffle from one place to another.
If that’s what these two attempt to do, I can see how that may cause issues for Casey and Merritt.
Nevertheless, if you’re wondering if there’s still some lingering romantic tension between Malcolm and Lori, just take a peek at their exchange at the end!
