Relationships: We all want good ones, but even the best ones can feel like they take more than they give.
Marshals has not been keen on relationships over the past six episodes, given that its main character has been in denial about his wife’s death.
The other characters have been focused on understanding the nature of the job. Most have not had the opportunity to look at romantic relationships.
Marshals Season 1 Episode 7 “Family Business” covers almost everything about relationships that can make them feel like a lot of work, and why people never trust after leaving a relationship.
The week’s case mirrors the characters’ lives, as some try to enter new relationships while others reflect on those they’ve had.
Kayce has already caught someone else’s attention, and she is hellbent on getting him, but this Kayce is to be approached with caution.
While he might have begun to accept that Monica is gone, he’s not ready to let someone else in yet. It would feel like he’s replacing her, and that can feel like betrayal.
So when the daughter of the man in saved in Marshals Season 1 Episode 4 returns, Kayce smiles out of courtesy, but he’s also interested.
But she makes a mistake of tagging along with her father, who can’t read the room and immediately starts talking business.
Being a Dutton comes with its own kind of trauma related to money and deals. It destroyed the family, and Kayce knows that if he returns to that world, it will eat him alive.
His family broke every rule — personal and legal — to safeguard their fortune. Kayce does not want a fortune; he wants a simple life where he can raise his family.
If I were to advise him, I’d tell him to go for it.
Everyone wishes that they could spend the rest of their lives with the love of their life. But life always has another plan, and we can never guess.
People do get lonely, and even the strongest of men could use someone to share their recent fears with. It makes the burden feel less heavy.
And while Monica was great at giving advice, she’s no longer here.
This lady does not mean anything bad; it was a situation that went in the wrong direction.
Opening your heart to something new is not betrayal; it’s enrichment. No one can ever replace Monica, but Kayce can create space for someone new.
Whether that happens remains to be seen because there’s always the Tate side of things, and he never minces words.
Meanwhile, we’ve caught glimpses of Belle’s life, but everyone comes out in the open at this hour.
I mean, I knew her marriage took a hit when she was working undercover, but I just had no idea it was this bad.
Hearing her tell Pete about the arrangement she has with her husband nearly knocked the wind out of me.
And while that arrangement might work for a while, it’s not the best approach.
I get wanting to make sure your family is as stable as possible, but an arrangement where your husband seeks comfort in other people is not stability. It’s an illusion of one.
It might work for a while, but there are so many points of failure in this plan that it’s not even funny.
How long until her son is grown and can see or sense that not everyone is okay, and that they haven’t been for a long time?
What happens if her husband develops feelings for another woman? What about if she starts something with someone? Oh snap! It already happened.
Let’s just put our cards on the table here: workplace romances, especially between people with a power imbalance, are a terrible idea.
If things don’t work out, and they rarely do, that team is fractured forever.
And even if they do, nothing will ever be the same. Someone will always be distracted because they’re in a dangerous situation with their lover.
It’s a double-edged sword that becomes sharper when Miles and Pete’s daughter are factored in.
I mean, what is this 9-1-1?
Next thing you know, Tate has joined the Marshals because his dad is also one.
“Family Business” does a lot to interrogate relationships. Can trust that took decades to build be rebuilt once it’s broken?
Can a connection weather a rough take off? The answers are left uncertain.
But one thing is for sure: This is about to become messy.
Gut Check
“Family Business” introduces relationship drama to this show, and I’m not sure how to feel.
I have been convinced at some point that shows can do without romantic drama, but I know it makes for good TV. The execution will make all the difference.
Ironically, it is the most grounded episode of Marshals. Kayce and Miles have calmed down, and it makes the show feel 70% less angsty.
Intrusive Thoughts
- Miles is back in the good graces of the reservation, and he seems elated about that. The crash will be bigger when they fault him for something.
- Belle and Cal’s kiss? 10/10. Do they need to happen? Absolutely not.
- I am loving the relationship between Santos and Cowboy, as she calls Kayce. She really seems to understand him. Now that’s a workplace romance I’d support.
- These end-of-episode music scenes are actually good, but too short. This guy was killing it.
