Elsa takes the lead right alongside Sam. He and Elsa are getting close. When she looks at a hole in her pant leg at the thighs, another Commanche says she rides too good for white man pants. Sam agrees.

Margaret trusts James to take them where he wants to go, and no matter where that is, Elsa's future will be different than she likely wants.

Indians are coming, and the pioneers take up arms. Shea and Charlie stop them. Shea said they invited them to trade because they need provisions.

A Commanche woman will help Elsa with her pants. They enter a tent where women are sewing.

There is a lot of bartering and trading going on. James spots a helmet someone has, but it's not for sale. It's from the Spanish who killed their people. He's got a thing or two to say about the white man.

Charlie asks Shea if they've come across any barb wire yet. Charlie says that will carve up the country like little parcels and everything they love will be gone.

Elsa exits the tent wearing chaps. She and Sam take off together.

Shea gives the bad news to the pioneers that only the young and old can ride in the wagons and the others will walk or ride horseback, but if they don't know how, then it's not a good place to start.

He offers to the group, either north to Fort Laramie and on to Oregon to Denver. The land isn't free in Denver. James offers for those who want to come with him can do it, but he won't baby them. They'll work hard and make the trip or they'll die on the way.

James and Shea taunt each other about the fate of the pioneers. Ultimately, the pioneers choose to go with James. They'll head out in the morning.

Sam and Elsa begin making plans. He says she doesn't need wagons to see the mountains. She says it's settled. He shall take her to see them. He jumps up. He's got to offer her father something for her.

But there is something -ahead. A herd of buffalo roam. Sam will teach her to hunt.

He teaches her to hunt so that the animal dies quickly, shot behnd the ear. He guts the animal and removes its heart. He hands it to her. Eat. It's strength is her strength.

Sam rides back to the encampment with the heart held high. Others go after the bison. She shows up in front of Margaret, face covered in blood, announcing that she killed a buffalo.

Thomas isn't going with Shea. He wants to see Neomi to Oregon. Thomas asks Shea not to leave them. Elsa wonders where Shea is going. Oregon, honey. With you. But she's not going to Oregon. She's staying.

James laughs when Margaret tells him about Elsa. Just thereafter, Elsa is called outside by James and Margaret. Sam has a horse. She advises James take the horse. Margaret is beside heself. She asks James to shoot Sam or something. Elsa and Sam walk off hand in hand.

Elsa and Sam make love while she imagines in her head that she's going to be above societal failures and condemnation.

Shea drops by with alcohol figurin' James can use it after what he saw of Elsa. James says she's probably going to fall in love with ever man she meets before one sticks.

Shea says he can't lead people he can't trust, and he doesn't trust the pioneers. He thinks Shea should lead. Shea will protect them, but James has to lead.

Elsa is washing herself by the river. Margaret joins her. Margaret wants Elsa to snap out of it. It's her duty to pick up Elsa when she falls, and she can't do that if she doesn't know where she is or who.

Elsa is riding with them to Oregon, but that's it. Margaret wonders if there's some form of ceremony. Nope. Margaret wants Elsa and Sam to say vows before God so it at least has a chance. Elsa says that Sam saved her life twice and James' once. She doesn't need God's permission to love him; God sent him.

The Commanche are going with the wagon train.

Thomas teaches Neomi how to be comfortable with the ride. They laugh together. Everyone is doing great on horseback. They're having fun.

Cook teaches the kids about deer and other American food.

Sam shows James how to break a stallion using water. Sam assures James the horse is broke. And if he wants the horse to give his heart to James, James has to run him. James does as he's advised.

When he comes up on the wagon train, James stops and tells the stallion, "This place is beautiful." Margaret watches him, saying that's where Elsa gets it. Her spirit. The wind drives her, she tells John.

Now, James asks Sam where Elsa will live. Sam says he'll build her a house if that's what she wants, but he thinks she'd rather fight bandits with him. James agrees. And if she changes her mind, Sam will take her back to him. He'll marry Elsa, but he'll still belong to the people and the people to the land. He doesn't dare leave it. Maybe one day, James will find land like that, too.

Elsa wakes up to find a vest and necklace from Sam. They're saying goodbye. She's the wife of a warrior and a warrior. And they're gone.
