Recap

Tariq shows up to Barbara's class, dropping off a student, and announces that he's dating the kid's mom. Barbara is unimpressed.

Janine is doing well at her fellowship, preparing for a big presentation to request an ASL interpreter for a student of Jacob's.

Gregory's students interrupt his lunch to hang out in his classroom, much to his chagrin.

Barbara becomes an unlikely mentor for Tariq.

Janine has the district's approval to hire an ASL interpreter but is finding it more difficult to move through the process than she expected.

Gregory confronts Jacob and asks him to make his students stop hanging out in his classroom. Jacob tells Gregory that this makes him "the cool teacher," which Gregory doesn't know how to take.

Gregory begrudgingly starts giving advice to the students hanging out in his room, which backfires.

Janine struggles with the hiring process for the ASL interpreter because no one wants to take the job.

Ava notices that Imani, the deaf student, isn't able to participate in conversations in real time, and is determined to fix it. She goes back to the district to discuss the issue with Janine.

Manny comes into Janine's office to commiserate with her about how hard it is to get things done in the district but encourages her to get things done however she needs to.

Janine asks Jacob for Imani's parents' contact information.

Gregory tells the students they're allowed to hang out in his classroom, but sets boundaries.

Janine convinces Imani's parents to threaten the district with the media if they don't provide the ASL interpreter, and it works.

Abbott Elementary Season 3 Episode 3 Quotes

Jacob: Wait, wait, hold on. Are you saying that in their free time, these kids are voluntarily choosing to come into your classroom?"
Gregory: You're beginning to understand the gravity of the situation now.
Jacob: Oh my God! Don't you see?
Gregory: See what?
Jacob: Gregory...you're the cool teacher!

You don't get to choose the parents or stepparents of the children that you teach. But they say it takes a village. And sometimes there's a Tariq in your village.
