Her student teacher compliments her about her teaching so soon after her son passed. She advised him that Liam had been murdered along with several other children. She apologizes for her brutally honest remarks.

Her husband walks into Jonah's room and is depressed over losing his brother. He doesn't know whether to delete his brother's gaming profile. He reminds him that mom is available to talk. And that they are doing another interview because Mom is passionate about the cause.

She picks up her husband and recounts her day. She asks about Jonah, and he tells her to ask Jonah himself. She has been having trouble connecting with Jonah since Liam's death.

She goes on the news and speaks about how special Liam was.

He was a victim of a school shooting. She speaks publicly and lobbies for political action Senate Bill 83 which reinstates the ban on assault rifles.

The interviewer shows a denier who believes that the shooting had been staged. They played a video of Joanna Pierce, who expressed her belief that child traffickers and global media want to come into her home and take her guns.
She believes it's not real. And her video has a million views.

Laura is visibly upset that they are amplifying the deniers.

Laura speaks to her lawyer about defamation and dismisses Jonah when he tells her dinner is ready.

She finds out that she has no legal recourse, and her son confronts her at the dinner table. He tells her she should have checked Twitter first.

And he storms away from the table.

Outside the courtroom, Eric calms Jonah down. He blames himself. They re-enter the courtroom.

In a grief support group, Laura tells the group about the deniers and how she wants to publish Liam's death certificate. Her husband does not support her pushback. She is concerned that people do not believe them.

One of the group members says he typically believes those groups, but it's not fun when it's your child. Laura says she wants to look them in the eye and tell them her son was real.

She meets with two other parents to make a statement to the deniers. Several of the parents don't come. She brings evidence of his life and death and opens it up to questions. They ask several questions that seem suspicious in reference to the shooting.

Joanna Pierce asks about her maiden name and inquires if it is a coincidence that a Swedish influencer with the same name lobbied for stricter gun laws.

Joanna asks for her adoption papers, and Laura has to admit she couldn't carry a child and that her boys were hers.
The encounter gets nasty.

Laura calls Eric to tell him that she is being investigated for sexual harassment. The deniers have gotten to her job. Eric tells her to come home immediately. The deniers published their address, cell phone numbers, and her social security numbers online.

They meet with the police to make a report on the threats and Joanna Pierce. The police ask do they have any family in the area or somewhere they can stay.

Laura apologizes for confronting the activists as they check into a hotel. He suggests they move to Baltimore, stay with his parents, and transfer Jonah. He offers to her that Jonah needs a fresh start. She's on tenure track, but he suggests she could use a sabbatical.
She storms off in anger.

She meets with a friend from the support group who advises her that the other parents do not want them to come anymore.

Jonah is followed home while riding his bike. Someone throws a can at his face and knocks him to the ground. He gets home and cries to his dad about why he let her go on tv. Eric promises to keep him safe.

At the police department, Laura asks about Joanna Pierce, and they have no evidence of her involvement.

The police ask if she has a gun. She refuses and storms out.

Eric demands they leave town. Laura doesn't want to live like a fugitive. The community has turned on them because the deniers have overrun the city.

They plan to leave against her wishes to be safe and leave the police department.

Eric takes out a safe and checks a gun to see if it's loaded. He puts the lockbox with the loaded gun into his bag.

Jonah and Laura get pancakes, and Eric lets them go without him.

Laura and Jonah ride to the restaurant, and he asks about  Joanna Pierce. She tells him there is not much they can do. She apologizes for not being herself since Liam died. He understands.

They pull up to a large crowd, and she spots Joanna Pierce. She gets out to confront Joanna and the mob, who are shouting no more lies.

Laura confronts her and takes her bullhorn. The police take her away as the crowd chants. Joanna declares she wants to press charges.

Eric bails her out of jail and is served a temporary protection order against Laura.

In court, the defense attorney asks if she understood the terms of the restraining order. Three weeks later, she allegedly brought a gun to Joanna's house.

In a flashback, she confronts her husband with his gun license from the state. They argue because he already bought the gun without consulting her.

He blames her for Jonah's assault. He tells her it's not about Liam but her needing an enemy.

She demands that he give her the gun so she can get rid of it. He goes to find it, and the weapon is gone. Jonah has snuck out of the window and taken Joanna's address.

His parents try to find him. He's in an Uber and doesn't answer her questions directly.

Back in court, his mom says she brought the gun for protection and wanted all this to stop.

Jonah shows up at Joanna's house. She is listening to music and doesn't hear him enter. Her dog gets agitated, and she realizes someone is in her home. She takes out her gun and goes to the door. She sees Jonah in the closet and asks if they are hurting him. She shows extreme compassion for him.

Laura and Eric approach the house and hear a gunshot.

Back in court, the prosecutor asks about the phone call to Jonah.

Laura and Eric find Joanna's body, and Laura tells Eric to get Jonah out of the house.
She calls 911 and says she shot someone.

Her defense attorney tells her she did well on the stand, but Jonah has to take the stand. Laura protests, but it's already decided.

Laura wants to take the Murder 3 offer to avoid her son taking the stand. Her husband believes she will be acquitted. If she takes the plea, it's a minimum of 15 years. She thinks the guilt is too much for him to take.

Eric cries, and she pleads with him to let her take the plea for their family. She tells him to take Jonah somewhere they can both heal.

They hug, and she holds her husband.
She takes the guilty plea and waives the right to any further appeal.
She makes a statement about Liam and how we know we are real because of who we love. She turns around and makes a statement to Joanna's loved ones. She tells her family that she loves them and that it's okay,

Her plea is accepted, and the judge remands her. Jonah and Eric hold each other as she is led away. Jonah cries into his father's arms.
