When you watch American Crime Season 1 Episode 6, you'll see just how far one mother will go to get what she wants. After finding out about Carter escaping, Barb is determined to get Matt's case tried as a hate crime and even goes on TV to fight for Matt. She explains to the reporter she is convinced, thanks to Carter escaping, that Carter is trying to run away from the truth and she knows what he did was based on the color of Matt's skin. She tries to explain her actions by saying Matt's case is similar to other race cases and even though Matt was white it shouldn't make it any different. In the end, the drug dealer who Carter assaulted comes forward and gives a statement where he says Carter was using racial slurs while he was beating him up which leads to more charges for Carter including a charge for a hate crime. Meanwhile, Tony gets even more involved with former gang members and is determined to get revenge on the person who beat up Jenny. While he's drunk and on drugs, they all go to find the guy and Tony beats him up while being videotaped. It's clear Tony doesn't see anything wrong with what he did and doesn't think the videotape will come back to haunt him.
