Rossi remembers the day of his wife's funeral. He's bereft. He left the funeral early because he couldn't watch her the coffin close or her going into the ground. He couldn't be there for her final moments he cries into Prentiss's arms.

He's currently chatting with Sidney in her home. When he asks if that's her husband, she doesn't say no. Instead she asks where that was taken. Elias calls, and Sidney tells him Rossi is there. Elias tell Sidney Rossi is very dangerous. He quit the job, he says, because his company was doing something wrong.

Elias recalled a past event when he heard Rossi's name. When Rossi is asked to leave, his face gives away that he knows.

Elias and Sidney have been married the entire length of his kills. He started shortly after they married. Rossi wants a timeline putting Elias into the same places as the abductions.

Elias walks right into the FBI office to see Rossi.

January 2022

Tara is at an al-anon group. Rebecca speaks next. That was the first time that Tara ever went to a meeting. They both had alcoholic fathers and a "qualifier" in their ex. That's when Tara learned Rebecca was gay.

Present

The attorney general doesn't want to give them approval to go after Elias since she closed the case. Rebecca buys them some time by playing the cover your ass angle. They get 48 hours.

Tara hopes she can take Rebecca for coffee when this is all over so she can make amends. Rebecca says no, not to be cruel, but because she's moving to Sacramento. She accepts Tara's amends and says goodbye.

Rossi begins talking with Sicarius. Elias says yes, that's him. But he's tongue-tied. He's read all of Rossi's books and is a huge fan. Rossi is like, omg. Waddya know? Our suspect used things from that book.

Elias knows Rossi's schtick, though. He knows how Rossi is reading him. And then Rossi begins talking about Cyrus. Rossi says that if someone had to grow up under his thumb, he'd almost feel sorry for that poor son of a bitch. Almost.

Elias says that he knows people who don't get obsessed like the killers Rossi writes about. Then he drops off his laptop and cell phone and leaves.

Ramona could make the difference. But since she won't, Garcia considers bringing Tyler in for an ID. He hones in on Elias and says he's not here. Alvez points out Tyler's useage of sorry means leave me alone not that he's actually sorry.

Garcia wants a minute. He assures her it's not one of those people and says he'll call her.

Elias wants Sidney to pack some bags. She won't do anything until he tells her what the hell is going on. Elias killed his programmer, Brandon Jones, who looks like Hal from next door. Sidney recognizes the similarity. Elias is spinning a bullshit tale, but Sidney isn't buying it.

Elias blames the FBI for killing Brandon, getting Sidney all confused.

Rossi knows that Sidney is the weak link, and so does Elias, who is scaring the shit out of her.

Rossi gets a message from Garcia that seems to be meant for Tyler. Tyler somehow accesses that message on his phone. What the hell? Tyler sees that message, he gets another that says phishing link opened by target. Tracking bug planted. Located via GPS? And it shows FBI field office in Seattle Washington.

Tyler is heading to Seattle to try to find and kill Elias.

May 2006

Tyler is with his sister and her new baby. He's feeding the baby with a smile on his face. Alison is a single mom. He wants her to know he's here for her no matter what. It was always the siblings and their mom. Now it's the four of them.

Sidney is running through the supermarket as the Stones, Shattered, plays. Rossi finds her in the chips aisle.

Rossi spells out a little bit about psychopaths. He tells her that a married man isn't a threat, which is why Elias is the most prolific serial killer he's ever seen.

Elias is in the parking lot filming that Special Agent David Rossi won't leave him alone. The attorney general is angry. She wants Rossi's badge and gun pulled. This woman is so fucking embarrassing.

Alvez susses out that Garcia has been seeing Tyler, and he's not happy.

Rossi is outside of Elias's house when Elias knocks on the window and invites him inside. He uses the "there's a hot blonde with only minutes left to live" maneuver, which gets Rossi inside, where he's waiting with wine.

Elias eggs him on by saying the BAU are terrible at their job. Why did Rossi walk inside? Rossi knows Elias has been thinking about killing his wife and children. They then trade barbs about who they are and what they do, culminating with Elias wondering why he'd need drugs and wine when Rossi is 79 and he's not. Then he gets the jump on Rossi.

August 2002

Elias is taking a pregnant Sidney to their new house.

Rossi is tied up inside the house. But Tyler is outside and watches Elias drive to the garage and drive back out. He's tracking Rossi's phone and on the hunt.

Meanwhile at the BAU, everyone gets wind of the message Garcia sent that sent Tyler on the path. Garcia is going to the field with JJ and Alvez.

Rossi has to pee, so they pull over and Elias drags a tied Rossi to urinate. Elias sees a car coming, but he didn't see that Tyler was already there and armed.

A truck pulls over to see if they need help. Elias gets them to leave with Rossi's help, and Tyler removes his finger from the trigger.

Will is with Alvez and JJ and Garcia. Will has info on the phishing thing, and they realize that Tyler is tracking Rossi. Garcia tracks Tyler and finds they're near the first shipping container.

Rossi has never been to the container site, so Elias spells it out for him. Tyler is there. Elias toys with him. Rossi screams for Tyler to shoot him. Elias says that he gave Alison a choice -- her life or her baby's. Then he says he was lying. She died crying like a little bitch. He shoots Tyler and grabs Rossi. They're on the move again.

February 2020

Garcia is guzzling wine across the table from Alvez. They're on a date. They're talking about the weird flu coming out of China. Garcia says every year people freak out, but it's not like the world is going to shut down. Alvez orders two more glasses of wine both for him.

She says their date is clunky, and they both laugh. She finds it very hard to have a conversation with him without dunking on him. They thought it would work, but it doesn't. Garcia knows that their people are out there. He's not so sure.

The team arrives where Elias and Rossi had been. Tyler's phone is pinging. Garcia is panicked. Alvez wants her to stay with him. Garcia finds Tyler down on the ground. Shoulder wound, 45 caliber. They need to staunch the bleeding.

Garcia promises that as long as he lives, she'll hold it over his head for years.

Rossi asks Voit to kill him instead of leaving him underground. Rossi wonders the purpose of the container. It's not used for death because he'd smell it. Rossi calls Voit a cliche. He used his birth name, and Voit never even notices. This is where it all started, isn't it?

This is where Lee Duval died and where Elias Voit was born. Elias says good luck and goodbye.

Elias and Sidney are at a cheap motel. She wonders if he's safe.

Garcia gets a ping. He's live streaming. Rossi is cutting the ropes with a knife, screaming for help.

Criminal Minds Season 16 Episode 9 Quotes

The Latin phrase Memento Mori translates to Remember that you must die. Roman slaves whispered it to their generals to keep them from being consumed by hubris.

Elias

Prentiss: Are you positive Elias Voit is Sicarius? It will be a heavy lift to reopen the investigation.
Rossi: No, I'm not positive, but the wife recognized him from the footage, and she's a spitting image of Sicarius's last victim, Ramona.
