Colton Wolf, the suspect Leaphorn is pursuing, has hired another private eye to find a woman named Linda Maddox, who he claims is his mother. The P.I. comes through with the name of Maddox's boyfriend. Now Wolf is stalking Chee at the hospital. When talking with Bern on the phone, Chee spots Wolf and informs Bern he's there. Wolf pulls the fire alarm. Joe tells Emma about what Benny had told him about the blond man (Wolf). They're interrupted by Bern's call about Wolf. Chee hides above the ceiling panels but Wolf figures that out, shooting upward. Chee jumps onto him and they struggle. The shot security guard rolls his mace to Chee, who blinds Wolf. Then Bern shows up and Wolf jumps out the window. He shoots a cop and runs, with Leaphorn and Manuelito in pursuit. But all they find is his abandoned vehicle and his wig. Joe and Gordo organize a search for Wolf. Jim stops by. He offers to drive Benny to his mother. On Leaphorn's orders, Bern locates on microfiche the pages that Wolf burned. Wolf stumbles on a remote home. An old Indian woman chastises him for stealing her water. Then she cleans him up and takes him in. Jim and Benny dine on a snowcone and a spicy pickle. Jim gives Benny his card and tells him to call collect anytime. Bern's research shows there's no uranium left at the old drill site. Leaphorn wonders why Vines is buildling a mine there. Emma delivers a baby in a home birth then weeps in her truck. Based on a dumping complaint, Joe determines where Wolf's trailer had traveled. Wolf kills the old woman and steals her horse. After Wolf had gotten back to his trailer, Joe and Bern arrive.
