With his truck blown up, Joe Leaphorn drags the wounded Jim Chee to the road to get help. Meanwhile, their shooter cleans his wounds at his trailer. Joe blocks the road causing a semi cab driver to stop. He calls Bernie Manuelito from the hospital and drafts her to get Jim's statement when he awakens, while Joe tracks down another lead. The killer puts a bomb inside a doll and wraps it up like a gift. Joe tells Emma to push back the medicine man's visit. Bernie picks up some native medicine for Jim. Joe questions B.J. Vines, who is evasive, about J.J.'s buckle being in his lockbox. Gordo suggests that Leaphorn's father Henry might have some insight. Chee apologizes to Bernie. She gives him the pouch as protection. Henry, the former tribal police boss, questions Joe's choices in life. But he does give Joe a lead, Margaret Cigarette, the blind healer. She informs him the cult may have reshaped itself. Joe and Jim form a theory that Dillon Charley may have given B.J. something that Emerson wanted to get back. So Tomas stole it. Emma rejects the overture of a female reporter who wants to interview her. Joe and Bernie debate her Border Patrol opportunity. Joe and Bernie revisit the burn site and find the empty box. They also locate Tomas Charley's body. They also turn up his son Benny holding the doll-bomb box. Joe discovers the bomb and sends away Bern and Benny. The killer gets Chee's room number. Joe and Henry defuse the bomb. Everyone gathers to watch the moon landing. Joe breaks the bad news to Benny. Benny says he'd seen the killer near his house and that his grandpa said he blew up the oil well. Dressed in scrubs, the killer arrives at the hospital.
