Leaphorn and Manuelito roll up on Wolf's trailer. There's no immediate backup to be found. Wolf senses them and slips out the back. While they're poking around inside the trailer, he pins them with semiautomatic fire. By the time they recover, Wolf tries to escape in their police SUV. They find their vehicle off the road and abandoned. Wolf soon runs out of ammo shooting at Joe and Bern. Leaphorn jumps off a ledge in pursuit of Wolf. Joe wakes up the next morning bloodied and battered but alive. He splints his broken wrist. Bern and Gordo grudgingly agree to work together to search for Leaphorn on horseback. Wolf's canteen is empty. Joe gets the drop on Wolf. Wolf soon regrets testing Leaphorn's noose around his neck. Rosemary Vines surprises Chee at his motel room. She was unaware of Tomas Charley's murder. He sees her crying in her car. An armed B.J. Vines visits Jim next, accusing him of having an affair with Rosemary. When Chee disarms him, he tried to hire Jim to discover with whom Rosemary is having that affair. Wolf tries to get into Joe's head. Then he determines his arrest is personal to Leaphorn. Joe gets too close and Wolf kicks him. Then Leaphorn almost hangs him. Sally tells Emma she feels unfit to be a mother. Wolf surprises Joe and runs off. He jumps Leaphorn when Joe bends over to inspect Wolf's bindings. But Joe plays possum and gets the advantage on Wolf, holding him at gunpoint. Bern hears his gunshot and finds them. B.J. warns Rosemary to stay out of his business. Then he gives her a necklace engraved "Fidelis" ("faithful"). Bern shoves Wolf into a cell. Wolf and Joe lock eyes across the silent police station.
