Recap

David, who has gotten nothing but As his entire life, is horrified to get a B in Frasier’s class. When he complains to Frasier, Frasier tells him that all students have the opportunity to rewrite their papers and get the average grade from the two.

Frasier learns that when Freddy is drunk, his natural intelligence is highlighted. His vocabulary grows, and he remembers his French. Frasier is thrilled to know that all of that knowledge still exists in his son.

Frasier, who is a visiting guest lecturer at Harvard, would like to earn a professorship title. Olivia tells him it usually takes years of work, but Frasier believes he can convince the board if he can meet with them.

Olivia is meeting with Provost Dev Sharma for dinner and makes sure that Frasier knows where they will be. It turns out Provost Sharma is against his faculty drinking, but Frasier has already asked Eve to bring over expensive wine and whiskey.

Then a very drunk Freddy comes over calling Frasier, Dad, and David comes in saying he knew he’d find Uncle Frasier at the bar.

Olivia tells Frasier that Sharma thinks he’s a drunk and that he should pull his request for professorship and try again next year. Instead, Frasier begs Olivia to invite Sharma to one of Frasier’s lectures so he can see him at his best.

Sharma is impressed with Frasier’s lecture. Frasier invites him and Olivia back to his office for coffee. Before they arrive, Frasier asks Alan to get rid of his cocktail. Alan pours it into his cup of coffee.

David comes in to give Frasier his rewritten paper and mixes up the coffees. Frasier panics, not knowing if Sharma has grabbed the spiked coffee. Sharma has and asks if Frasier has put brandy in the coffee. Alan steps up, but instead of admitting that the spiked coffee is his, he merely corrects the Provost and tells him it is actually rum. Sharma leaves.

David helps Freddy work on his paper overnight. They both think it’s brilliant, but Frasier gives David a B-. David is incensed. He can’t tell his father he only got a B. When Frasier is stung by a bee, he worries he’ll get splotchy before he meets with the board for one last attempt to win them over. He asks for David’s Epipen. But David wants 60 seconds to convince Frasier how well he knows the material in the paper.

After David’s rousing speech, Frasier will still only give him a B+. Freddy gives Frasier the epinephrine and tells him he needs to go to the hospital to get checked out. Frasier pretends to comply but then ditches Freddy to get to his meeting with the board.

Frasier arrives at the meeting looking horribly drunk, thanks to the side effects of the epinephrine. When he passes out, Provost Sharma calls 911 and tells Olivia to put Dr. Crane on probation.

Freddy checks on David, who has decided to drop out of Harvard because of his behavior toward Frasier. He says he’ll become a fireman. Freddy reminds him that he once got stuck on top of a bunk bed because the ladder fell down.

The boys ponder what makes Cranes so competitive. Freddy shares that he left Harvard because he was unhappy there. But David is happy. He loves Harvard. Freddy encourages him to stick it out.

Frasier Season 1 Episode 8 Quotes

Frasier: Freddy, what’s going on? Are you pontificating?
Moose: When Freddy gets drunk, he gets wicked smart.
Freddy: That’s so reductive.
Smokey: See. He sounds like you. What a nerd.

Frasier: Surely, there must be some sort of an alternate route to professorship, a Crane lane, if you will.
Alan: Well, you know, Olivia, Frasier, and I have the same level of education. We have the same experience as psychiatrists. We’re basically doing the same job, except that I’m a professor and he’s not.
Olivia: And you think that’s unfair?
Alan: No, I’m just gloating.
