Recap

After Alan’s fifth TA in a month quits, Olivia hires David for the job even though he’s an undergraduate. Going by what’s written in the TA handbook, David has scheduled Alan’s office hours, booked his appointments, and gotten rid of the alcohol in Alan’s office. David found all of Alan’s hiding places for Scotch, including in his globe, a hollowed-out book, and a lamp, and emptied them.

When Alan tries to get David to walk his cat, David tells him that the TA handbook states that personal errands are forbidden. So, Alan rewrites the TA handbook and sends an online copy to David, who begins following Alan’s new rules.

Freddy brings home Nicole, a woman he’s met. She’s unimpressed to learn that Freddy lives with his father until Freddy explains that Frasier needs to be looked after. When Frasier walks in, he plays along as though he has signs of dementia.

Freddy worries he’s losing his independence by living with his father. Frasier asks him to fix the broken buzzer of the apartment building to help out, and feels like Father of the Year.

Freddy fixes the door buzzer but worries something might be leaking in the walls. He makes a small hole, but Frasier is aghast. Eve tells Frasier that once Freddy begins a project, he never quits until he’s certain it’s done right, even if it takes months.

Frasier calls in a plumber to find the leak, and Freddy is offended that he won’t let him do anything. Freddy has paid his way for years, and now Frasier provides his housing, pays the bills, and makes half his meals. Frasier says he’s happy to do it because Freddy is his son, but Freddy isn’t happy.

When Frasier hurts his knee, he still won’t allow Freddy to help him. He calls Alan to come close his refrigerator door when he can’t get to it. Alan comes but sends David ahead to set the scene for his arrival with tea and a small British flag.

Alan thinks Frasier resists Freddy’s help because he doesn’t want to turn into his father. But Frasier explains that he’ll never be his father. Martin was always there for him and deserved Frasier’s help when he was older and needed it. Frasier feels like he hasn’t been there for Freddy and needs to make up for that.

Alan points out that he needs to stop thinking about his relationship with Freddy as a balance sheet.

Frasier asks Freddy why he’s putting up with Alan’s ridiculous requests. David explains that he knows he’s been coddled most of his life, but even though some of Alan’s requests are menial tasks, he feels valued in doing them.

Frasier realizes that Freddy doesn’t feel valued in their home. He apologizes and lets Freddy fix the hole in the wall.

When Nicole returns, Frasier continues to dementia ruse to keep things going but tells Freddy he won’t do it forever.

Frasier Season 1 Episode 9 Quotes

Freddy: You won’t let me do anything to help out around here. I mean, you pay the bills, you cook half my meals.
Frasier: Which I am happy to do. You’re my son.
Freddy: But I’m also an adult. I spent a long time on my own. I’m used to pulling my own weight. I don’t need you stocking the fridge with pudding cups.
Frasier: You eat those.
Freddy: Not the butterscotch.

Freddy: It’s just, you have no idea how hard it is to explain to a woman that I’m a grown man living with my Dad.
Frasier: Right. I couldn’t possibly imagine what that’s like.
