Maddy runs the Five Star Hotel in San Diego and is up for a promotion. She and her son Wesley go home to Park City, Utah, for Christmas. Wesley is working on his family tree, and there's a spot missing for his brother.

When the duo enters Paul's ski shop, skis fall down and sparks fly between Paul and Maddy. Paul sets Wesley up with some rental ski gear and seems interested that Maddy is single.

After that, Paul rushes to hear his son, Cody, in a holiday concert. His sister, Taylor, attends as well, but Paul feels his wife's absence and wishes his son would socialize better.

Later, the adoption agency calls, saying that Rose Peterson is interested in Cody, and Paul turns them down.

The next day, he picks Cody up from school and learns Cody became fast friends with Maddy's son, Wesley, and that the boys want to hang out.

Paul's shop is in trouble, and he needs a miracle for it to stay open.

When he picks up Cody, Paul learns Maddy's full name is Rose Madeline Peterson, and her dad is the owner of the resort he's trying to merge with.

Maddy explains about We's project and how he learned he had a brother adopted into another family and wanted to meet him. She had no idea it was him. While Paul knows that, he still hasn't told Cody he's adopted yet.

Cody won't stop talking about Wesley. Paul tries to distract him by taking him Christmas tree shopping the next day, but they run into Maddy and Wes there, too. The boys want to decorate Wesley's tree together, and it's difficult to refuse them.

Mr. Peterson invites Paul in when he brings Cody by, and becomes an intimate family affair as they sing Christmas carols around the piano. Wesley asks Cody about his mom, and he says she died two years ago, but he has his dad and Aunt Taylor.

When Maddy visits her dad at work the next day, he's concerned she's too focused on work, and she needs time for romance and herself too. When she runs into Paul at a cafe later, she apologizes that Wes brought up Susan, but Paul was relieved with how Cody handled it.

The family met up at the Christmas tree lighting, and after Cody got frustrated at a game, Wesley gave him his prize instead, impressing the adults. Mr. Peterson listens to Paul's pitch about offering a ski delivery service at the resort and suggests a trial run.

At the tree lighting, Paul notices that his sister Taylor and best friend Jeremy are holding hands. He confronts his friend the next day at work, and then Paul gets swamped doing fittings at the resort. Thankfully, Maddy helps him.

She reassures him that even when Wesley learned about the adoption, she was still his mom. Later, Paul checks in with Taylor, and she suggests they go on a double date and bring the boys bowling.

Maddy's mom tries to convince her to stay in Utah, saying that her dad needs a manager at his hotel, but she doesn't want favoritism.

After the bowling date, Maddy and Paul admire some holiday ornaments and almost kiss before discussing how complicated things are.

That night, Cody asks lots of questions, including if Jeremy and Taylor might get married and adopt a kid. Adoption doesn't phase him much.

While prepping for Christmas Eve, Maddy finally tells her parents the truth and how Wesley and Cody are connected. At the same time, Jeremy tells Paul that it's time to tell Cody the truth.

Mr. Peterson doesn't want to the ski delivery program until he hires a new manager, so Paul still has financial issues. Maddy won't take the new manager position if it puts Paul in an awkward position.

Paul considers moving to teach at a ski school in CO until he reads Cody's new Christmas wish, which is for him, Paul, Wesley, and Maddy to be a family. With that, he told Cody he was adopted, and he loved him, and the family headed to the Petersons.

He apologizes to Maddy, and they tell the boys together that they are brothers.
