Recap

Mrs. Coulter wakes up and pulls Lyra's hair from the remains of the bomb. The golden monkey examines Roke, who is dead. Mrs. Coulter grabs the hair and runs to Fra Pavel. She gives him the hair and asks him to tell her if Lyra survived.

Pavel asks the alethiometer and reads it. It tells him Lyra is in darkness. Mrs. Coulter asks him to tell her what it says.

In the land of the dead, Roger wakes up. There is a tremendous glowing tear in the land of the dead. Roger calls for Lyra as the other ghosts awaken.

Back at Asriel's camp, dust readings are fluctuating.

Serafina Pekkala flies. The earth is crumbling underneath her.

A great storm rolls through the mulefa world, and the sky turns grey. Mary looks through the amber lens and watches the dust being pulled away.

Stelmaria and Asriel look out over the land, which is splitting apart, close to their fortress. Asriel realizes this means Alarbus has delivered their message.

Mrs. Coulter and her daemon return to Asriel's camp in the intention craft.

Stelmaria announces Mrs. Coulter's return to Asriel. Asriel tells Mrs. Coulter that the intercision chamber will be able to work with the "abyss" that has been created, which is on a scale he didn't know was possible.

Mrs. Coulter tells him Lyra is dead. He says he is sorry that happened, but what he is doing is more important.

She explains that Roke also died in aid of her trying to dismantle this bomb, but the divine light detonated it, which was Metatron's response to his destruction of Alarbus.

Mrs. Coulter blames Asriel for Lyra's death, believing it was the bomb that killed their daughter.

Roger finds Lyra and wakes her up. Will wakes, too. Debris falls around them.

Asriel descends into the crack in the earth. He looks at it through his lens and sees the dust.

Atal and Mary try to understand what is happening to the sraf and why it is suddenly pouring out of the world.

Ruta and Ogunwe convene. Ruta says she has called for Serafina, and Sergi is currently scouting.

Sergi flies over the crack and is pulled into the abyss. Ruta feels his pain. Asriel watches Sergi get sucked down until he dissolves into dust and disappears. Ruta dies in Ogunwe's arms.

Lyra finds Lee again. Will wonders if the blast was due to them being in the land of the dead. Lyra tells them they need to keep moving. Roger calls for them, as he has found a way up.

They head high up along the crags of old possessions. Lyra looks down, seeing strange glowing streams. Will is drawn to the glow, and she pulls him back, assuring him they will get out.

They come to a narrow but high jump. Lyra does it with ease. Lee goes next, followed by Will.

Asriel realizes that though this abyss is retaliation, they can use it to entrap angels as it pulls on dust. Ogunwe tries to get him to see reason, as Ruta is now dead. Asriel insists that, putting aside their losses, this is a good thing.

Serafina Pekkala arrives, and they draw their weapons. Serafina says she heard her sister's death call. Asriel assures her that Ruta was their ally. He explains that the abyss is not death but a void between universes, sucking all the dust into it.

Serafina realizes that Ruta will be forever in limbo and never know peace. Serafina tells them she saw the chasm in every world she flew through.

Serafina blames Asriel and pulls her dagger on him. Asriel kneels before her, telling his men to put down their weapons, and explains that they miss Ruta, too.

Ogunwe tells her that the chasm is a response to their provocation, and if Serafina wants revenge, she should stand with them against Metatron. Serafina withdraws her dagger.

As they walk, Lyra and Roger recount when the cliff-ghasts attacked the balloon. Lee smiles. Will gets defensive.

Mrs. Coulter searches for the intention craft, asking Ogunwe. He tells her she cannot leave again without council approval. She says the only vote that seems to matter is Asriel's.

Ogunwe asks what's happened. Mrs. Coulter tells him Lyra is dead. He offers his sympathies. She asks again for the craft. Ogunwe tells her Asriel took it and flew north.

Ogunwe leaves her alone. Mrs. Coulter walks towards the edge, ordering her golden monkey to come, but he walks away in the other direction.

Lyra, Lee, Will, Roger, and the ghosts walk higher as the harpies circle above them. Will stops and looks out. Lyra asks if he's looking for his father.

Lee says they could send a message back through the crowd and asks his father's name. Will tells him, "John Parry."

Lee figures out that this is "Jopari," the shaman, and Will is the shaman's son. Lee explains that Jopari told him about Will. Will and Lyra are surprised that Lee knows him.

Lee says he might have a way to summon him. He tells them to go ahead, and he'll catch up. Lee heads back the way they came.

In the far north, Asriel and Stelmaria have found Iorek Byrnison. As Asriel approaches, Iorek knocks him back. Asriel says he is unarmed. Iorek is angry because Asriel blew a hole in the sky, and now his bears are starving.

Asriel asks about "Lyra Silvertongue" and wants to know more about her. Iorek says she is everything he is not. Asriel says she is gone -- if he dies, he can never avenge her. Iorek explains that Lyra went to the land of the dead but walked in alive.

Asriel asks how she got in. Iorek tells him about the knife, how he fixed it, and how Lyra went in to rescue Roger. Asriel asks if it's Heaven or Hell. Iorek says it is neither -- it is a soulless place. Asriel realizes Lyra is staging a prison break.

As Lyra and the others continue forward, the cliff edge over the chasm grows narrower. Lyra stares into the abyss and stops. Will calls to her, but she cannot hear.

Lyra falls in, but a harpy swoops in, grabs her, then carries her further along the rocks and drops her down at a safe point.

Serafina finds Mrs. Coulter and expresses her sympathies about Lyra. Mrs. Coulter confesses that she tortured a witch once. Serafina says she knows who she is. Mrs. Coulter tells Serafina how the witch suffered and screamed.

Serafina understands that Mrs. Coulter is trying to provoke her into killing her. Mrs. Coulter tells her to do it, and Ruta would have.

Serafina says she is not Ruta and will not do it. Serafina says she, too, feels the loss of Lyra and says love makes people fragile. Mrs. Coulter feels incapable of love.

Serafina argues that she is, or she wouldn't feel this way. Serafina tells her that she also lost her boy long ago, and Lyra gave her hope again.

Mrs. Coulter admits she was scared of the Eve prophecy as it pertained to Lyra. Serafina says that the first Eve was brave for daring to experience.

Will reaches Lyra and hugs her. The harpy hangs around. Lyra says she wants to give the harpy something as thanks -- a name. She names her "Gracious Wings." The harpy hisses.

Will asks if they are going in the right direction. Gracious Wings points to where they must go. Lyra remarks that Gracious Wings likes true stories. Gracious Wings tells them she and the other harpies didn't know that there was anything but lies -- the true stories feed them.

Lyra asks her to get the other ghosts to tell true stories. Gracious Wings flies towards the others. Lyra calls to the dead, telling them the harpies will help if they tell them stories of their lives.

Asriel returns, informing Mrs. Coulter that Lyra is alive, though she is in the land of the dead. There is no Heaven or Hell, only Purgatory. She does not believe him.

Asriel tells her Iorek Byrnison told him they cut into the world with the knife, which broke, but Iorek fixed it. Mrs. Coulter refuses to believe it without proof. Asriel says panserbjørn cannot lie.

Mrs. Coulter realizes this is the other part of the prophecy -- Lyra will defeat death, which is what she is currently doing.

Lyra, Roger, and Will continue. They hear whistling. Lee emerges from a tunnel, saying someone wants to see Will. Will goes in, and there is his father.

Will tells him he hasn't done what his father asked and doesn't want to fight. Will says he isn't what his father wants him to be. John Parry tells him he is much more, and they hug.

Roger and Lyra sit and talk. He tells her how brave she always was and is impressed by how she tamed the harpies.

They both remark on how they thought they could return to Oxford together and reflect on how many good memories they have together. They realize that they will probably end up in different places when they leave.

John Parry tells Will how remarkable it is that he made it here. Will says it was Lyra's idea. John refers to Lyra as Eve and says the two of them will set everyone free.

Will says he doesn't know if he can do it. John tells him this is because Will is separate from his daemon, which weakens a person.

John says he guided Will's daemon to Asriel's republic, and as soon as the ghosts are freed, he must cut through and go to her, as she is vulnerable. Will promises to do so.

John advises Will not to live in a world that's not his own. John says he did, and it hurts every day. He says Will deserves a good, full life with his mother.

Will asks what will happen to John when he goes through to the other world. John tells him he'll be at one with everyone again, free, just like all the other souls.

Will laments that he can't say goodbye again. John tells him not to, then and tells him how proud he is of his son. They hug again, and John puts the knife firmly into Will's grasp.

Will returns to Roger and Lyra. He tells them they need to keep going.

Serafina tells Asriel and Mrs. Coulter that daemons can't go to the land of the dead, so Pan and Lyra are separated. Asriel says they will scout for him. Mrs. Coulter explains that they are vulnerable.

Serafina says she will send her daemon Kaisa. Serafina tells them that if Lyra and Will are doing this, Asriel's rebellion pales in comparison, and Lyra should be everyone's focus.

Will, Lyra, and Roger come to a dead end and can go no further. Will pulls out the knife and cuts into it. A beautiful bright world shines on them, with a shining blue lake.

Roger asks what will happen once they step through. Will says John told him they would be free -- they'll drift apart but be connected to everything alive.

Roger volunteers to go first. Lyra says she will miss him. He thanks her for saving him and asks her to go to the roof back in Jordan for him. With Lyra in tears, Roger steps through. He disintegrates into dust.

Lee hugs Lyra goodbye, thanking him, and tips his hat to Will, overjoyed that he will be reunited with Hester. He steps through and disintegrates into dust. Lyra and Will watch as the ghosts eagerly step through to their freedom.

Mary heads to the lake, hearing voices. She looks into the sky at something.

Mrs. Coulter finds her golden monkey, telling him Lyra is alive. She sits with him but cannot look at him.

Mrs. Coulter tells him how much it hurts when they're apart, and she doesn't know why she sent him away all those times -- at first, it was curiosity, but now it's just a way to push out what she can't bear to feel. She tells him he was always the strong one.

Mrs. Coulter pleads for him to come back to her and holds out her hand. After a moment, the goldne monkey takes it.

Xaphania appears to Asriel and Mrs. Coulter, saying the first part of the prophecy has been fulfilled -- Will and Lyra have released the dead from their prison.

Xaphania tells them Metatron's Purgatory is broken, and his control is weakened. He will come at them with everything he has. The final rebellion has begun.

His Dark Materials Season 3 Episode 6 Quotes

I’m not like the two of you. I’m here for something other than my own interests.

Commander Ogunwe

In the beginning, man was given the gift of dust. It ignited his mind and freed his will, but that free will has corrupted mankind. Dust shall be drawn into eternal darkness once more. That which was given shall be taken away.

Metatron
