In Law & Order: SVU Season 17 Episode 3, we first see two very different families. Avery Parker is a white transgender girl with two loving, accepting parents who make her smoothies in the morning, while Darius McCray is an African-American boy who has to take his younger sister to school while his single mother works. Darius and his two friends get in trouble at school and he is teased by his friends for being told he has talent as an artist.
Darius and Avery's paths cross when Darius and his friends see her on a bridge and decide to find out if she's a girl or a boy. The boys call her a tranny and a he-she, and during the ensuing altercation, Darius pushes Avery and she falls off the bridge and breaks her femur. The other two boys involved in the incident claim Darius pushed Avery and their parents blame Avery for being a "freak." Darius' mother is disappointed and Darius is remorseful. He hates himself for what he did.
Darius makes Avery a drawing apologizing and she accepts his apology, but when she dies as the result of her injuries Darius is charged as an adult with manslaughter. Avery's parents disagree with the decision but they can't stop it. They can only try to testify on Darius' behalf.
