Law & Order: SVU Season 22 Episode 4 revolves around questions surrounding vigilante justice and the NYPD's standing.

When a young foster girl is reported missing/kidnapped, SVU investigates. They check out her mom's ex-boyfriend, who is a pimp only to find out the girl was found bleeding out on the street. Nidia was pregnant and someone gave her the morning after pill without her permission. She tells SVU she's in love with her foster dad, AJ.

AJ denies it, but a quick investigation proves he raped Nidia and got her the morning after pill. He is arrested and arraigned. Nidia's bio dad, a veteran missing his leg, comes to the arraignment. Afterward, Fin is waiting with him to see the prisoner be transported. Fin gets a call and while his back is turned, Mickey shoots AJ three times, then drops his weapon and says his name and serial number.

Benson speaks hypothetically to Barba about Mickey's case. Barba goes to see Carisi and ends up taking the case.

Garland warns Barba not to go for a vigilante defense, which Barba mostly ignores, and Carisi argues that it does not matter if this man was a veteran -- he shot a suspect at point blank range in the chest while the guy was in handcuffs.
