Recap

A man is cradling a baby walking down a busy street.

A man and woman are listening to someone on the phone. Their son has been kidnapped.

The kidnapper is asking for money and directs them to put a suitcase full of money on the desk. They are waiting for a cablecar to pass by on which their son is expected to be waiting.

When they get to the car, they find their baby, but he's dead. A couple of idiots make their getaway. Their son has been mutilated, his little eyes sewn wide open.

Perry and Pete Strickland are on surveillance of a well-known comedy actor in a little restaurant.

The guy is on the move, and so are Perry and Pete. The guy is watching his own movie in a local theater.

Pete's annoyed that they're even after Chubby due to a moral's clause. The guy brought a lot of joy to people, so who cares what he does with his pants off?

Chubby follows after them, screaming and hollering.

Perry arrives at the Mason Farm, where he lives. He finds a package he has sent to his son, Teddy, that was returned to sender. Inside, there are final notice bills strewn about.

Perry looks lights a cigarette and looks at a family photo while a cow moos from outside. He's wandered too close to the airport. Perry sees a woman out there who nods her disapproval at him.

His barn is in shambles. It shouldn't even be standing. Perry chats with the cow and commiserates with him.

Herman Baggerly called, and E.B. drops by asking Perry to step in on the case. Perry hasn't seen E.B. in three months. This is a live one, though.

Perry delivers the Chubby Charmichael stuff to the guy who wanted it. But Chubby was with Velma Fuller, the studio's biggest up and coming starlet, so he decides the $200 he was promised isn't anywhere near as much as he wants. Ultimately, he takes the photos and walks, unpaid.

Perry is at the morgue getting information on a guy who was found dead with women's lingerie under his man-clothes. He's looking through the dead's wardrobe to make himself look better at court.

Perry is surprised to see Della in court. Perry's up for assault for throwing a cow patty at someone. The attorney calls out Perry for his dishonorable discharge from the military.

Perry meets Herman Baggerly who is impressed that Perry was in the war, surviving the battle of the Orgone (?) in France.

Herman is requesting help for Matthew and Emily Dodson from the beginning of the hour. They're all followers of Sister Alice from the Radiant Assembly of God, who has a radio show. She changed Herman's life.

Perry wonders why they haven't called in the police. Herman doesn't trust the LAPD to do the job. Neither would Perry.

The police begin tearing apart the Dodsons as soon as they're called. Matthew Dodson is angry, beginning to shout.

Camera in hand, Perry begins investigating the house. He finds Emily sitting on a bed but doesn't disturb her.

The baby's room is just as it was, and Perry looks around, always diligent to photograph what he finds useful. Emily arrives and Perry offers her a cigarette.

Emily recognizes the way Perry holds his cigarette as something done to keep the enemy from shooting him while on the battlefield.

They talk about their children before Emily begins to cry.

Back at the office, Perry, Della, and E.B. talk about the case, wondering how nobody heard anything while someone crept in and stole their baby.

E.B. is sure that the Dodson's are good people. Still, someone knew they would be good for the $100 grand they asked, and someone else had to stand over the baby and sew those eyes shut.

Perry is banging some women. There's nothing loving about it as they practically wrestle each other to find their pleasure. The woman fucks Perry right off the beg.

It's the woman from the airport.

Perry suggests she sleep over, and the woman says she'll give him $6000 for the dump. Perry laughs. She doesn't even want to sleep here, but she will toss money at him to buy it.

Perry visits the cops, and one of them tries cuffing him because he fancies himself a tough guy.

Perry insults cops, and they guy veers at him again.

Perry visits the coroner to get thread from Charlie's eyes, and he's visibly affected by the experience.

It's New Year's Eve, and Perry and Pete are at a Studio party hoping to get paid for their cheap shots of Velma. The guy wants the negatives before he pays for the photos, but Perry tries to say he doesn't have them. The guy doesn't play ball, and his thug lights the negatives on fire.

The guy tries to say Perry is taking away people's happiness for money. They are only giving him $200 minus $199 for all the bullshit.

Then his thugs brand Perry with the butt of a pistol.

The annoying detective is the bad guy and is busy killing five people on New Year's Eve. He even stands on the throat of one of them until his neck cracks.

He's cold and calculating.

Perry is drunk and trying to reach his son for New Year's. But his ex-wife hangs up on him. The woman is there. She wants him to clean up before they screw.

Perry slams the shit out of the firetruck he bought for his son. They don't make things so good, he says.

The woman kisses Perry on the head and leaves.

Inspiration hits, and Perry begins laying out all of the evidence on the living room floor.

I'd have said it was over when the talkies came, but clearly, the man still has a lot to offer the world.

E.B.

That's your problem; you get no fun out of life.
