Recap

At a conference, a woman accuses Maddie of only wanting attention. She is a civil rights activist and says she did 20 years before the Innocence Project helped her. She thinks Maddie only cares about privileged and famous people. There is a poor guy named Devon who is on death row for killing a cop.

Maddie and Easy get more info. Devon was a drug dealer who no one wants to defend. He was arrested because of the car he was driving.

Maddie wants to take the case. Easy isn't sure.

Violet does a podcast about the  death penalty.

Maddie comes to see Devon. He wonders why Easy isn't there. Maddie says Easy is not afraid to take chances. She remembers her first meeting with Easy.

Devon denies killing the cop. He says he thinks the cops told the taxi driver what to say.  He doesn't know why he was ID'd as the shooter when he didn't do anything.

Maddie and Amita talk to the taxi driver who says he saw everything and knew that this guy was involved in drugs. Devon was already in cuffs when he ID'd him. He saw the same car two days later. Maddie and Amita agree that this is impossible and the guy is lying. So is Maddie gonna take the case? Maddie says she's in.

Bellows comes into his office. He discovers his office is now campaign headquarters, which he's not happy about. He tells Noah, his new strategist, that it is against the law for them to campaign here. Noah says that they will be moving across the street soon. He wants to run a 9-figure campaign. Conner is not happy. Bellows tells Conner he has to show why he should be campaign manager.

Bodie confirms that the car was impounded. Easy refuses to go to Cleveland to see Devon.

Bodie goes to the car rental place and talks to a sales guy. He finds out that there were six Impalas rented out at the time, license plates almost identical.

Amita and Maddie go to talk to Ray. He says he isn't a drug dealer anymore and won't talk to them unless they are paying clients. Next Bodie shows up at Ray's barber shop next and Ray says the rental company lent cars to drug dealers. Other Impalas could have been on the road that day. He was never asked this at trial.

Maddie goes to see Levi. She says Dylan is not in her life. Levi is hurt that she thought he killed Rosemary. He says they knew they had to stick together and now he's hurt and she's happy. Maddie says maybe if he didn't screw up all the time... he says she poisoned the jury and he doesn't want her as a lawyer anymore.  Maddie has a flashback of telling her friend about Easy.

Violet says they should subpoena the rental company. Bodie disagrees. Anyway they found the other witness -- Nancy Curtis. She testified that she saw the shooting from across the street from the park.

Maddie goes to Levi's hearing and sits in the spectator section. Brian claims Levi attacked them unprovoked. Maddie rolls her eyes. The public defender seems to know nothing and the judge is impatient with him flipping through papers. The public defender asks no questions.

In therapy, Easy's wife is upset that she didn't know he was going to therapy. She complains about him answering Maddie's letter and changing his career and the time he spends with his family. Easy says he needed something more. The therapist asks if some of what he needs can come from his family. He says yes. Irene doesn't know what to think.

Heather is on the stand telling a fake story about Levi attacking her unprovoked. The public defender has no idea what's going on. Maddie demands to be part of the case. The defender tells Levi to let Maddie help him. Maddie proves Heather is lying. Levi is resentful.

Maddie and Amita go to see Nancy. She can't see much out her window. Violet asks why Nancy testified Devon was the shooter? Nancy tries to throw them out. Maddie realizes someone threatened Nancy and her son. She is afraid to tell the truth. She says that everyone knew the victim was a cop but no one will admit to killing him.

Devon is sure he's going to be executed. Maddie talks to him about her experience. All she had was her truth.

Isabel talks to the ADA. She says offer Levi a deal and then he can be second chair when they reprosecute Levi and Maddie for Rosemary's murder.

Amita says nobody in the neighborhood will talk because they are trying to survive so the cops can't help them and the violence continues. They go to talk to Ray about who could get away with the killing. Maddie realizes Ray is scared and that means the killer is still around. They get Ray to talk.He wants to get out of East Cleveland. He says Omar, the shooter, is on death row elsewhere.

Maddie goes to see Omar who tries to flirt with her. She tells him to confess to the murder. He says he has a son whose mom said he was dead. He wants her to bring his son to visit him.

Maddie has a flashback of Easy showing her some forensic evidence that Bellows was wrong about the murder weapon and that meant they had a shot of going h0ome.

Omar's son visits him. His son is mad at him being a murderer. Omar is proud his son is a doctor, everyone else in the family is in jail. His son is not interested in him and leaves. Omar says goodbye with tears in his eyes after his son goes.  Omar says he will testify to the truth.

Levi is talking to some woman at his anger management class. He says he doesn't know what his deal is. He sits with the woman.

Omar is stabbed while waiting to be taken to court in a snowstorm.

Without Omar it's a long shot. Devon will take that long shot.

Isabella wants to talk to Bellows. She says she can get Levi to talk about Rosemary in his anger management classes.

The judge is reluctant but Maddie finally gets her to give a stay of execution for six months.

Everyone agrees with Levi that Maddie has a hero complex but don't see what the problem with that is.

Maddie has a flashback of telling her friend she has a new court date and hugging her. She doesn't want to leave her.

Proven Innocent Season 1 Episode 7 Quotes

Amina: Oh please. There ain't no ending anything when you come from an underprivileged and dying community.
Maddie: If someone needs our help, we don't give a damn where they come from.
Amina: Good. An innocent man, Devon Watkins, is on death row for murdering a cop. He's not famous and he's poor as dirt. You ready to take on the case everyone else is too afraid to take?

Success comes from experience. Easy and I use what happened to me in the justice system as motivation. I lived the hell. We don't want another person to go through that.
