Proven Innocent Season 1 Episode 2 revolves around a woman who was convicted of murder 16 years ago after confessing to slashing a different man's throat.

Tamara Folsom confessed to police that she slashed the throat of a man who raped her but they refused to believe she didn't kill someone completely different. When the team takes on the case, the physical evidence mysteriously disappears, leaving them with little recourse, and then a judge denies their motion to dismiss based on the belief that it was possible Tamara committed both crimes.

Maddie refuses to give up, instead looking into who else might have committed the murder. The investigation leads them to another woman who was being abused by the victim and who was forced into prostitution with him. However, the woman won't help them because she's scared of getting hurt or killed if she talks.

Meanwhile, Bellows' campaign manager advises him that Madeline's negative press about him is affecting his approval ratings. His wife wants him to go after Madeline, which he refuses to do because he says people see her as a victim. He also refuses his wife's advice to get rid of his new hire, Isabel. At a press conference, Bellows says that when he was an inexperienced prosecutor a criminal slipped through his fingers and killed a single mother the next month. Isabel is that woman's daughter and is joining his firm. He says he is tough on crime and will not let anything like this happen again, and that is why he is running for Attorney General.

And elsewhere, Easy has problems at home when his wife resents the amount of time he spends at work and thinks his defense of Madeline is a betrayal to his community since Madeline is white and people of color are disproportionately affected by the criminal justice system.
