Seventeen hours before Schmigadoon, Melissa and Josh are discussing how to set up their tent. They cooperate and get the tent set up, but it collapses with them inside. They end up sleeping under the stars.

In Schmigadoon, Josh examines his heart rock. Carson runs by and Josh pursues him. He finds him up a tree. He talks him down and Emma arrives. They reconcile.

Emma offers to cross the bridge with Josh and Carson in the morning.

Melissa wakes up on the ground with her heart rock in her hand when she hears a car horn. Doc Lopez and his mother have come to rescue her. He declares his love for her. His mother questions Melissa on whether she truly loves Jorge and Melissa hesitates. The Widow Lopez declares that she must go to Josh and be honest with him.

As Josh, Emma, and Carson prepare to cross the bridge, Carson's questions remind Josh of his best memories of his relationship with Melissa. Josh hesitates at the bridge. Emma realizes he's still in love with Melissa.

Josh apologizes because he cares for both of them and their influence has made him a better person. At Emma's urging, he leaves them to look for Melissa.

It's Election Day in Schmigadoon with support behind Mildred Layton. They vote by show of hands in Schmigadoon. The vote is interrupted by Melissa arriving, looking for Josh.

A second attempt to vote is interrupted by Josh arriving.

Melissa apologizes for her part of their breakup and then Josh sings for her. They have a dance number as the other townsfolk disappear momentarily.

Mildred is upset by the town's applause for the lovers. Emma speaks up and asserts the newcomers have made the town better. Florence arrives to defend Aloysius. Emma comes clean about Carson. Everyone confesses something. Nancy and Fred approach with their baby and it turns out Nancy is Mildred's daughter.

Reverand Layton announces that he's gay as well and confesses his feelings for Aloysius.

Mildred has a breakdown and freaks out at the townsfolk. The vote is taken and Aloysius wins another term as mayor.

Melissa offers Mildred some advice about change.

One final ensemble number with a distinct change in musical style. The townsfolk accompany Josh and Melissa to the footbridge where they bid goodbye to their new friends and leave for home.
