Recap

Josh and Melissa get married. They enjoy married life and work their jobs. They meet with a fertility doctor.

Melissa is in a grocery store. A young girl mentions pudding, to which Melissa eagerly asks, "Did somebody say corn puddin'?" but everyone looks at her oddly.

A patient's father accuses Joh of malpractice and threatens to sue.

Melissa continues to do ultrasounds for patients.

Melissa runs into a neighbor, who assumes she's pregnant, and Melissa tells her she isn't. The neighbor awkwardly runs away.

Josh and Melissa sit sadly during their picnic in the park.

They continue their practices.

Their fertility doctor tells them that they are not pregnant this cycle.

Melissa cries in bed. Josh starts to make a suggestion, and Melissa immediately concurs.

Josh and Melissa, dressed in old-timey Schmigadoon garb, head out into the woods with backpacks, searching for the bridge to Schmigadoon. They search fruitlessly for hours. Josh suggests heading back before it gets dark. They drive in the rain and get a flat tire.

They get out on a bridge. They hear music. They see a sign that reads: "Welcome To Schmicago."

A sparkling Narrator sings a song, with backup dancers, welcoming them to Schmicago.

The town appears behind them, along with the former residents of Schmigadoon as familiar characters from '60s-'70s musicals, including the Mayor of Schmigadoon, now as a Sweeney Todd type. Josh waves, but Melissa urges him to be quiet.

Josh digs the sexy, scantily-clad dancers.

Josh and Melissa applaud at the end of the number.

The Narrator announces the Tale of Josh and Melissa, the story of a typical married couple searching for happiness.

He narrates that they are disappointed, explaining that one can never return to Schmicago, and they will have to enter Schmicago and search for a place to stay.

As they stroll, Melissa explains to Josh that they are in the next "era" of musicals, the '70s, which she is less familiar with. She always preferred happier older ones due to a bad experience when she was a child when her father took her to Sweeney Todd.

She says they are darker, sexier, and have imperfect rhymes.

Josh suggests they stay at Hotel Schmicago. Melissa is hesitant to stay, as she was hoping for the happy, vibrant world of Schmigadoon. Josh reminds her that nonetheless, they are in a magical land, and Josh says he actually vibes more with Schmicago.

He convinces her to stay the night; if she's still uncomfortable, they can leave in the morning.

They go into the hotel, where a stern Madame Frau at the front desk greets them. She starts to charge them by the hour, but they tell her they are married and refuse the offer of a "girl." She tells them checkout time is 10 a.m. The lush in the lobby cheers to them.

The hotel room is dingy and dirty. The ceiling leaks. The bed is creaky.

A friendly young woman enters and introduces herself as Jenny Banks. She flounces around in a Sally Bowles way, insisting they will be best friends and hoping they'll stay a while.

She tells them to come see her perform at the club that evening. They promise to do so, and she leaves. Josh doesn't recognize her, but Melissa tells him it's clearly Betsy -- she just changed her hair.

Melissa and Josh arrive at the Kratt Club. Many of the patrons are in a frozen pose.

The girls on stage, scantily clad, sing a song about being shocking. Its subject matter covers drag, bisexuality, tattoos, and orgasms -- nothing terribly shocking to a modern audience. Josh and Melissa are not that shocked., mostly a little confused.

The crowd applauds. An Emcee, who was Emma, the schoolteacher from Season 1, appears onstage. Josh recognizes her. The Emcee introduces the showgirls.

Madame Frau shows up and tells Josh and Melissa to move, as the table they are in is reserved for the owner, Mr. Kratt.

Kratt appears, saying it's fine, as they are new to Schmicago, and they should join him as his guests. He introduces himself as Octavius Kratt, and Josh and Melissa introduce themselves.

Kratt kisses Melissa's hand. He explains the club is merely a hobby, and he deals in electricity --every home and building in Schmicago has one of his generators. Kratt asks Melissa if she's got any theatrical aspirations. She says she's a doctor. He ominously excuses himself.

The Emcee introduces Jenny. Jenny sings a "Mein Herr"-type song, with a sexy chair dance. Josh is entranced. After the number, he excuses himself. The phone at Melissa's table rings. An odd couple beckons her over, but she gets up and goes the other way.

Josh enters a room that he thinks is the bathroom, but it's a backroom. He finds Elsie, one of the showgirls lying on the ground. He checks her pulse -- she's dead.

Melissa finds Josh and asks what is going on. As Josh explains, another showgirl appears, screams "Murder!" and runs off. Melissa tells Josh they need to leave.

They get to their car, but it's dead. The leprechaun is in the engine, having cut the wires. He tells them they need to make a "happy end." The leprechaun disappears.

Josh and Melissa try to run for it, but they just come back over the bridge through the mist and into Schmicago again, where a police officer has his gun drawn. The screaming showgirl from earlier points them out as murderers.

Another cop finds a gun -- the murder weapon -- in their car, and they drive Josh away to jail. The Narrator comes as a bookend to welcome Melissa -- and us -- to Schmicago.

Narrator

At one point, a lot of musicals had narrators, you know, like, instead of a story.
