Recap

The Narrator narrates that Josh is in jail for the murder of Elsie. Josh insists on his innocence.

Another prisoner gets thrown in by Sgt. Rivera -- a hippie. The hippie introduces himself as Topher, and Josh reluctantly offers a peace sign back (and his name).

Josh explains he's in for murder but didn't do it. Topher believes him -- however, Topher believes all the prisoners, even the ones who obviously did it.

Topher sings a song ("Doorway To Where") about how he hasn't figured out his life yet, at 30.

Josh assures Topher he's going to be okay. Topher says he's going to get Josh on the Happiness Bus.

Melissa visits a lawyer -- Bobby Flanagan. Flanagan says she already knows about Josh's case, but she doesn't come cheap. Melissa gives her $20. Bobby is impressed and goes into a sexy (short) song and dance.

Bobby assures Melissa she can get Josh off easily. Bobby recommends that Melissa find the real killer by getting a job at the club and snooping around. She gives Melissa an outfit for her audition, then heads out to meet Josh.

At the club, Madam Frau runs the auditions, A Chorus Line-style. The auditioners sing about how poor they are. Melissa arrives and joins the auditioners onstage. Sgt. Rivera is watching.

Melissa joins in for the next combo and is not very good compared to the other dancers. In the next verse, they all sing about how bad she is.

After the dance, Madame Frau says she wants to know why they are there.

One dancer talks about her parents' marriage falling apart, and how she turned to dance to cope. Another describes her childhood as a thinly veiled The Sound Of Music reference. Another says she went through puberty in Buffalo.

Melissa sings a moving solo about how she longs for a baby and how ironic it is she's an obstetrician -- and in addition, her husband is accused of murder.

They all dance some more. Melissa is terrible, managing to knock everyone else over. The song ends.

Mr. Kratt, who is watching, whispers to Madame Frau. Reluctantly, Frau offers Melissa the job.

At the jail, while Topher plays with a sock puppet, Bobby Flanagan enters to great enthusiasm from the prisoners.

Bobby approaches Josh and tells her his mistress hired her -- he corrects her, saying that Melissa is his wife. Bobby says she'll do her best to get him off.

Josh insists he didn't do it. She doesn't care. She says they need to pack some spectacle into the case -- his press conference will be in an hour.

Bobby leaves while the prisoners sing for her, and another prisoner gets electrocuted.

Back at the club, Madame Frau shows Melissa to her dressing room while Melissa tries to peer into the crime scene.

In the dressing room, Jenny greets Melissa, saying she doesn't believe Josh murdered Elsie at all. Jenny takes Melissa under her wing and suggests that Melissa move in with her since the late Elsie was her old roommate. Melissa agrees.

At the press conference, Bobby hands Josh a "script" to read from. She introduces him to the press, and he reads that this was a crime of passion due to "jazz."

Josh swears he never listened to jazz. He can't get through the script. He insists he didn't do it, and jazz isn't to blame. The press misconstrues Josh's words. Bobby urges them not to listen to him, but it's too late.

Later, Melissa shows up at the prison, telling Josh she got the job as the new dancer at the Kratt club. She explains that she did so to get more information to exonerate him.

Topher introduces himself to Melissa. Melissa is a little flustered to see him (he was Danny Bailey, her lover in Schmigadoon), and Topher's music starts again, but Josh pushes him away.

Melissa asks about the press conference. Josh says it went poorly, and now everyone wants him dead. He worries he could die in Schmicago. The Narrator assures him that it's a possibility.

Melissa tells Josh she moved into Elsie's old apartment, so she can dig up clues and prove Josh is innocent, and they will get their ending. They profess their love and kiss through the bars. Topher interrupts again.

Jenny shows Melissa to the apartment. She tells Melissa she can have any of Elsie's old dresses. Melissa notices the flowers. Jenny says they are from Mr. Kratt -- they have been "comforting each other" since Elsie died, as Elsie was his "favorite."

Jenny tells Melissa that Mr. Kratt has promised to make her a big star. Rivera enters with more flowers and a dress. (Rivera is Kratt's nephew).

Rivera gives Melissa the flowers, and she puts them in a vase. He tells her she's lucky to perform at the club. She pries for information from Rivera about Elsie. He tells her to stay out of it lest she end up like Josh.

Jenny comes out in her new dress. As Rivera leaves, Jenny assures Melissa that she's just doing what it takes to survive, like everyone here, and then goes.

Melissa, alone, searches the apartment for clues. She tries on a feather boa.

Jenny, Melissa, and the Emcee perform a prison-themed trio number -- "Bustin' Out."

Some hippies break down the prison walls with the Happiness Bus to rescue Topher and, subsequently, Josh. After some trepidation, Josh escapes with the hippies.

The audience at the club applauds the new act.

In the dressing room, Frau comes to get Melissa. She shows her to the star dressing room, the crime scene.

Alone, Melissa explores for evidence. She finds the box of chocolates Mr. Kratt had the other night, eats some, and finds a notebook with the address "17 Quick Street" written in it.

Jenny comes to check on Melissa. Melissa asks about the address, but it means nothing to Jenny, only that it is in a bad part of town.

In the Happiness Bus, the hippies sing a reprise of "Doorway To Where." The Narrator is unimpressed.
