Sibeth comes back to Pennsa. She manages to get the witch hunters on her side by using a combination of methods including begging, half-truths, manipulation, and threats.

Back where Baba Voss and the group is, they are surrounded by the scientist and his soldiers. He demands to be given Jeramarel's children and the bombs. Charlotte, Lu, and Wren get the children out.

At first, the scientist tries to trick Baba Voss into surrendering by appealing to his emotions. Baba sees through it and he prepares for a battle.

The scientist's soldiers force their way into the structure Baba and his group has barricaded themselves in and a showdown begins.

Using a combination of wit, thought, and sight, Baba and his group win the battle. Before the battle, Haniwa is introduced to a weapon from the ancestors -- a gun.

The win is pyrrhic, however. The scientist manages to escape the bombs and makes his way for Pennsa.

Baba and Kofun set the library on fire. This brings a rift between Kofun and Haniwa.

Harlan is saved by his friends who got him into Trivante. This puts him at odds with Trovere, who he ends up killing.

The Baba group divides itself into two, where one group heads for Pennsa to warn the Payans, and the other leads the children to safety.
