Recap

Mark checks on Petey in the bathroom. Petey says he just slipped. Petey double checks that no one can see in. Mark tells him that the neighborhood is primarily empty -- it’s only Mrs. Selvig next door.

Petey has a hallucination/memory of working with Irving, Mark, and Dylan. Suddenly he’s back in the basement with Mark. Petey explains that he gets disoriented. Mark asks Petey what “sunset park” is, but Petey doesn’t know.

Mrs. Selvig/Cobel sits at home in her kitchen, staring out the window. Petey tries to explain that the two sets of memories are hard to discern, but they said it would get better. Mark asks, “Who’s they?” Petey says “they” know severance is a blight on mankind, and they’re doing something about it.

Petey assures Mark it’s not the WMC; it’s someone else. Mark asks what Petey wants from him. Petey wonders if Mark wants to know what he’s doing down there. Mark assures Petey that he won’t ever unsever.

Petey explains that he found a department no one knows about that no one gets to leave - - they are still down there, right now. Petey doesn’t want to talk about it anymore, in case someone is listening. Petey asks where June is, then gets another headache and apologizes. He explains that June is his daughter.

Mrs. Selvig/Cobel watches Mark from her window, wondering if he’s okay.

Mark watches a news story about a severed woman who got pregnant at work. Natalie, a Lumon representative, makes a case for the procedure. Mark changes the channel and falls asleep in front of the television.

Mark goes down to the basement in the morning and wakes Petey up. Mark says he’s going to work and tells Petey he can stay. Mark explains that his wife died a few years ago in a car accident and that severance is helping him.

Petey notes that at work, sometimes Mark came in with red eyes. Mark says he’ll be back around six and tells Petey to eat whatever he wants.

Mark heads out. Mrs. Selvig is de-icing her stoop with a hairdryer. Mark thanks her for the cookies.

At work, Mark puts his things in his locker and heads downstairs. He receives a green envelope with the new work photos, one for each.

Helly tells Mark that she deleted the scary numbers. Mark asks her when, and the others tell him he was gone yesterday.

Helly announces that she has submitted her resignation request and assures Mark that it’s a good thing. Milchick arrives, telling Mark his Outie was shattered to miss a day at work. Milchick tells Mark to make his first morning announcements as department head.

Milchick takes photos while Mark makes the announcement. Among the announcements is the news that Helly’s resignation request has been denied. Helly runs off, upset.

Ricken and Devon arrive at Mark’s house. Ricken leaves a package outside Mark’s door.

Mrs. Selvig/Cobel exits her house and walks towards Mark’s door. She picks up the package.

Petey continues to write downstairs and gets a flashback of Mark asking him what he’s drawing.

Mrs. Selvig/Cobel enters the house with a key and heads down into the basement. No one appears to be there. Mrs. Selvig/Cobel smells one of Gemma’s candles and puts it in her purse. Her cellphone rings, and she answers. Petey, hiding, sees who it is and gets flashbacks to Ms.Cobel at work.

Ms. Cobel talks to Milchick on the phone about Helly and then heads off to work. Petey watches from the bushes. Petey has a hallucination of being in the hallway, looking at his map of the department. He walks along a bridge.

Mark checks on Helly, who has locked herself in the bathroom and has been in there for forty-five minutes. He warns her that he’s coming in.

She is writing notes on her skin - - she has written “LET ME OUT” on her arms. He remarks that he thought she was doing well. Helly tells him that the numbers scared her. He tells her to wash her arms and leaves.

Irving approaches Mark, worried about the situation. Irving says Helly needs Mark’s guidance and suggests showing her the Perpetuity Wing.

Ms. Cobel arrives and gives Milchick the package to open. It’s Ricken’s book (his fifth) about self-actualization. Mark arrives and meets with Ms. Cobel, saying Helly should see the Perpetuity Wing. Ms. Cobel asks if he’s filled out the slip. Mark notes how weird it’s been since Petey left. Ms. Cobel throws her mug at him, tells him it’s for his own good, and he goes.

Dylan and Irving talk about muscle shows. Helly makes a note -- a cry for help to her Outie -- and rolls it into the lid of a Sharpie. She tapes it up and grabs a drink of water, about to swallow it.

Mark shows up and tells her that the code detectors can read letters even inside the body, and then it is Milchick’s job to extract it. Helly spits out the lid into his hand. He tells her to shut down her workstation -- they are taking a trip.

As the Macrodata team walks down the hallway, Irving talks about the Lumon CEOs, who have all come from the same lineage. Dylan gives Helly and Mark ’Eagan Bingo’ to keep from dying of boredom.

They run into Burt and another woman from Optics and Design in the hallway. Dylan escalates the tension quickly, surprised to see them “out of their hole.” The woman from O&D explains that it was an egg drop challenge to keep their synergy up. Mark introduces Helly and tells them they are going to the Perpetuity Wing.

Burt and the other woman leave. Irving gazes at them longingly.

Ms. Cobel arrives back in her office. Milchick is there with Natalie, the Lumon rep from the news. Natalie tells Ms. Cobel that this meeting is about Petey, and the board is joining them.

After a moment of silence, Natalie informs Ms. Cobel that the board wants her to speak first. Ms. Cobel explains that the search for Kilmer (Petey) continues, but there were troubling signs of reintegration before his departure.

Natalie gets some information through her headset. Natalie conveys from the board that severance is irreversible. Ms. Cobel assures the board that her team is working hard to meet the deadline. Natalie interrupts to tell her the board has ended the call.

Irving explains to Helly that O&D is a two-person department. Dylan tells her that the Macrodata department is clever and true, while O&D is more cruelty-centered. Helly asks how many departments there are, but no one is sure.

Dylan says that decades ago, O&D tried a violent coup. Irving insists that’s a lie -- no one ever killed anyone, but there is a reason they keep all the departments apart. Helly jokingly suggests killing Mark to make a stand. Mark jokes with her.

They arrive at the Perpetuity Wing. Irving opens the door. There stands a lifelike statue of Jame Eagan, current Lumon CEO.

Irving explains the displays are for the CEOs, but the whole back part is Kier Eagan.

Petey walks along the road, disoriented, in his bathrobe.

Helly checks out the first female CEO, Myrtle Eagan. Stealthily, Helly crosses off a bingo square. Irving looks at Myrtle in awe, recounting the story of how Myrtle decided at seven years old that she would be the first female CEO of Lumon. Helly remarks that she wishes she could remember her childhood.

Irving takes Helly into a room with photos of teeth displayed on the walls. Irving states that Lemon has been working for the good of humanity since 1866. The images are smiles from people on the outside that Lumon has helped. Irving and Mark say that it’s noble. Dylan wants to go, but Helly hasn’t even seen the Kier Eagan part yet.

Inside is a perfect replica of Kier Eagan’s house.

In Kier Eagan’s bedroom, Irving discovers that the others have been playing bingo. He gets mad at Mark for perverting their founder’s message when Helly needs meaning. Mark says he never wanted to be department chief. The three of them realize Helly is gone. Mark goes off in search of her.

Helly runs through the hallways. Mark runs after her.

Milchick reads Ricken’s book.

Helly tries to get out via the stairwell. The door is locked. She grabs a fire extinguisher and breaks open the window. The red lights flash, and sirens blare. She tries to get the note (made from the bingo card) that says “NEVER COME BACK HERE” out the narrow window. Helly strains, cutting her arm on the shattered glass. Mark reaches her and pulls her away from the door.

Mr. Graner appears and asks Helly to come with him.

Mr. Graner sends Helly into the break room. She walks down the dark hallway, tending to her bleeding arm. Milchick is in the room waiting for her.

As he treats the wound on her arm, Milchick tells Helly he’s disappointed to see her here. Helly tries to appeal to his reason, but he is having none of it. Milchick asks her to sit at a table with a microphone, projector, tape recorder, and what appears to be a polygraph.

Milchick tells Helly to read the statement. She doesn’t want to. He insists. She does. He tells her she doesn’t mean it and asks her to do it again. He checks the graph. Ms. Cobel shakes her head. Milchick asks Helly to do it again.

Dylan leaves, turning out the lights, and Mark is alone. Mark replaces the old team photos with Petey in the frames with new photos. On the last one, as he pulls the frame off, he finds a hand-drawn map of the department.

Petey, with bloody nose and hands, stumbles through a gas station. He yells at the worker for tokens so that he can eat.

Mark goes up the elevator and leaves the empty Lumon building. It is raining outside, and the sky is dark.

Mark goes into the basement to check on Petey, who isn’t there.

Mark goes out for a drive in search of Petey. He sees an ambulance going by with its sirens on and follows it.

He arrives at the gas station. He sees EMTs leading a bloody-faced Petey out. Petey looks up at Mark and suddenly collapses. The EMTs get to work on him. Mark watches, stunned, and then leaves.

Mark returns home, stunned, and clears his basement of any evidence of Petey, putting it back the way it was. He turns out the light and heads back upstairs. He hears a buzzing and notices a cellphone ringing in the basement.

It’s like having two different lives suddenly stitched together, but the relativity’s fucked.

At work, you’d come in sometimes with red eyes. We had a joke that you had an elevator allergy.
