Camille Preaker is tasked with returning home to the town of Wind Gap to report on the murder of a young girl and the disappearance of another.
She hits up a motel near to her family home and indulges in a bath. The next day, she starts her investigation and she finds herself at her family home.
Her mother, Adora frostily welcomes her in and allows her back to her old room to stay for the duration. But Camille recalls her sister's death and heads out to the bar and meets up with an old friend, a detective and a potential suspect.
She wakes up in her car the next morning, returns home to her mother flipping out about what the town would think of her returning to town and drunkenly sleeping outside.
Camille visits the family of one of the children and tries to get some intel about what could have happened. She had to reiterate to the father that she was not blaming him for anything.
Camille later joined a search for the missing girl, and she crossed paths with Jackie, a friend of the family. As soon as Camille walked off to join the search, she was given a stern look from Jackie.
The missing girl's body is found in a window frame in an alleyway.
In flashbacks, we learn that a teenager aimed a gun at her while she was in the lake, she found nude photos in a barn, her sister died beside her, and she tried to wake her up at the funeral.
