Recap

Veggie and Lisa run into one another outside of Danny’s. Lisa is dropping off a cat to David. Veggie is there because Lisa went out in the middle of the night again, and he thought he’d find her at Danny’s.

Veggie didn’t know Lisa had a storage unit, and he’s upset. She says he wanted her to get rid of her old stuff when they moved in together, and she didn’t want to. She considers it a compromise.

But it’s not just the storage unit. Veggie is upset because he knows Lisa comes alive at night when he goes to sleep. He knows she’s not sleeping with Danny, but he almost wishes she were because then he could get angry. Then, they could work through it. But he doesn’t even understand their problem, let alone know how to fix it.

Lisa is sorry she’s been distant. Veggie says it’s because she thought he was going to propose.

Danny calls Amy, but it goes to voicemail. He leaves a message saying he knows things got weird when she left, and that’s not unusual for him, but he hopes she’ll want to see him again.

Lisa calls Danny, asking why he told Veggie she knew he was going to propose. She doesn’t remember telling Danny that. Danny tells her she did it when she was high and got arrested. Lisa’s at home now, but Veggie has left, so she doesn’t expect he’ll be proposing now.

Flashback to three years ago: Danny and Lisa met as guests sitting at the same table at a wedding. Danny was there with Chloe, who was about to sing for the bride, and spent most of the time with her manager, Milo. Danny helps Lisa update her dating profile app, and the two have fun joking and dancing all evening.

As Chloe sings on stage, Danny shows Lisa the engagement ring he has for Chloe.

Lisa goes to the ladies room, where she finds Veggie has responded to her new dating profile. While in the stall, she overhears Chloe in the ladies room with Milo. They’re kissing and making plans together.

Present day: Lisa wants to go dancing. Danny says he can’t because he’s agoraphobic. Lisa points out that he left the flat to come get her. Danny explains he was only able to do it because she needed him.

Lisa decides they need to dance right now. She puts on music and prods Danny to dance while they video chat. They do and have a great time. Lisa stops the music and asks Danny if he thought Chloe was the one. He no longer thinks there is such a thing as the one. Lisa admits she could have saved him from proposing to Chloe that night.

Flashback: Lisa steals the ring from Danny’s pocket, but he doesn’t realize it’s gone until he’s up on stage and about to propose to Chloe. Embarrassed, he starts singing instead. Chloe stops him and takes him off stage, where she tells him she was never going to say yes and that he’s going nowhere. She leaves with Milo.

Present: Lisa admits to taking the ring out of Danny’s pocket. He’s furious. Why would she do that? She admits that she knew Chloe was using him and that he deserved better. They’d only just met but she could tell he was kind and funny and she liked him.

Realizing what she’s said. Lisa hangs up. Surprised that Lisa admitted she likes him, Danny leaves his flat and heads to Lisa’s.

Veggie comes home. He thought he should be there tomorrow when his parents drop off Poppy. He tells Lisa that no matter what happens, he’ll always be her Veggie. He heads up to bed.

Lisa sees Danny outside her window. Over the phone, she tells him that Veggie is back. They talk on the phone but in front of the window. Danny tells Lisa that if she ever needs someone to remind her what a warm, kind, funny, certifiably crazy person who would do absolutely anything for anyone, to call him.

Lisa is touched. Danny heads back home. Neither knows what the next day will bring.

Still Up Season 1 Episode 8 Quotes

Lisa: I’m really sorry I’ve been distant lately.
Veggie: You have because you thought I was going to propose.
Lisa: What?

Lisa: I’m not sleeping with him, Veggie. Am I?
Veggie: No. It would make more sense to me if you were. I don’t think you know what it’s like for your partner to come alive as soon as you go to bed. It’s like I sleep through all of your shine. I wish you were sleeping with him. At least I could be angry, you know. We could work through it, but I don’t even know what the problem is, let alone how to fix it.
