Sandy races to catch a bus. He joins the throng waiting for Charles Lindbergh's airport visit to New Jersey. His Aunt Evelyn and Rabbi Bengelsdorf are also in the crowd. Philip's friend Earl is luring him into questionable choices, including following home random people. Alvin is the driver for obnoxious builder Abe Steinheim. Herman and the baker talk politics. As they listen to the war news on the radio, Bess, Herman, and his brother Monty debate on whether Lindbergh can win. Alvin tells Sandy how Steinheim cheats the people who work for him. Herman and Bess do their impersonation of George Burns and Gracie Allen. Bengelsdorf offers Evelyn a position. Lindbergh's plane is missing. Bess is going to look for a job. Bess and Evelyn bicker over Evelyn getting involved with Bengelsdorf. Then Evelyn helps Bess prepare for her job interview. Herman and Alvin argue over Steinheim's business practices. Bess gets hired at a department store. Sandy doesn't like what Earl is teaching Philip. Herman gets turned on by Bess's work look. The rabbi preaches a pacifist message. The Levin men go to the newsreels. Evelyn questions whether she is qualified for the job Bengelsdorf offered to her. Evelyn and the rabbi kiss. Alvin is at the same showing as the Levins although he hides from them. Bengelsdorf speaks at a broadcast America First rally, which doesn't go over well at the Levin house. Alvin explains that the rabbi's endorsement will allow Christians to vote for the anti-semitic Lindbergh. Bess realized into what Evelyn has stepped. Philip packs up his valuables in case New Jersey gets bombed. Alvin quits working for Steinheim and moves to Canada to enlist. Bess, with Philip in tow, stands in line to vote. Sandy remains a closet Lindy fan. Lindbergh wins the Presidency.
