Recap

A little kid asks someone where his mommy is. When he hears the answer he goes to her studio and stops cold in the doorway.

It's New York City. Grace is getting ready for her day.

Her son, Henry, wants a dog, but dad, Jonathan, is allergic.

Grace is helping him dress. He's a doctor and is getting dressed up, which Grace finds interesting.

They have a school benefit tonight, and he doesn't want to go. Grace scoffs.

Henry plays the violin, and on the way to school, Jonathan wonders if he actually practiced.

During a discussion about joy, Henry says his dad is often joyless when he's stressed, which he has been a lot lately. Now Jonathan is stressed about being joyless.

Grace is a therapist. It's her patient's third marriage, and when she brings up that perhaps she's a little too eager to see what she wants in men versus what's actually there.

Grace arrives somewhere, kissing a woman on the cheek. There is a new scholarship mom who wants to be an involved parent joining the committee meeting.

Her name is Elena. She has a boy named Miguel in fourth grade in addition to her baby.

Elena spends a lot of time looking at Grace.

The women want to auction Jonathan. The women are shocked when Elena undresses at the table to feed her baby.

Sylvia has seen her across the street from the school just sitting there waiting for her kids to come back out. She does admit that she has spectacular breasts, though.

Jonathan and Grace talk about protecting their son from reality when Grace considers moving outside of the city. She's done with Manhattan.

They have a playful relationship.

At the gym, an entirely nude Elena walks up to talk with Grace. Grace is sitting on a bench with Elena's vagina right in her face. Elena says that Grace made her feel very welcome. Then she sits down next to her. It's so incredibly awkward.

She is so close and speaks sexually.

Grace mentions the odd moment to Jonathan on the way to the benefit. He teases her about it. Jonathan is going to Boston in the morning.

Grace's father is there, as well. His name is Franklin. He's hoping to win one of Henry Ford's original dipsticks in the silent auction.

The women see Elena and call her the lactator in chief. She's surrounded by women. The girl looks at Grace, practically staring with longing eyes.

Jonathan wants to fool around instead of participating in the benefit.

They want Reardon to be synonymous with diversity, the hostess tells the almost entirely wealthy, white crowd.

They start the bidding on a glass of water to cleanse the pipes for more donations.

Grace wanders off to find a bathroom, and of course, Elena is there. She's crying. Grace wonders what's wrong.

She feels overwhelmed and lost. Grace offers her services for free, apologizing that it sounded "like that." She doesn't want Grace to be intimidated. While the parents can be, they are mostly kind. But she is the most kind, Elena says.

Elena gets her coat and walks to the elevator. Grace joins her in the elevator, offering her car service to take Elena home to pump. Elena says it would be faster to take the subway since she lives in Harlem.

Elena kisses Grace on the lips, thanking her for her kindness.

Jonathan just got paged. Someone's lungs filled with fluid, so he needs to go.

That is some penthouse.

Grace remembers seeing Jonathan working with the patient he went to see. Her name was Shelby.

Jonathan arrives home wondering how everything went. He doesn't answer, and she says she's sorry as he cries into her back.

He screws her from behind.

A man is laying in bed.

It's the voice from the beginning of the show. He's wit the boy from the beginning of the show. The man is holding a baby.

The boy runs down the street and to the studio.

Grace and Henry are getting ready for the day. Henry still wants a dog, and Grace admits his dad was responsible for the family dog at about Henry's age, and the dog got out and got hit by a car.

Grace's latest patients are having marriage troubles because of an affair.

Grace gets a message from Reardon. With sadness...

Grace wonders if the lying, the privacy, the need to be free might have started the affair.

Sylvia calls Grace, who only heard about a family tragedy. Sylvia says Elena was found dead. Murdered.

Sylvia blames the husband for some reason.

Grace remembers more about her conversation with Elena. Elena wondered if she unnerved Grace and hopes she would tell her if she did.

Cops are grilling the kids at school while Grace tries to reach Jonathan to tell him the news.

The police have tracked down Grace on the street. She just wants to know what happened.

They are asking questions that concern Grace. They ask if they can talk with Jonathan and have a lot of questions about his whereabouts.

Henry comes home wondering if everything is OK.

When the cop starts asking about the tuition, she raises her eyebrows, and they wonder if they're upsetting her. If they're not upsetting her, they're upsetting me.

While talking with Henry, Grace says that Elena seemed a little sad.

The cops are now talking to Elena's son.

The crime scene is pretty terrible. Elena doesn't seem to have a face. It seems very personal.

Grace tries Jonathan again, getting no answer.

While trying to text Jonathan, she hears buzzing in the bedroom. She's been calling him, but he left his phone at home.

She's genuinely perplexed and very concerned.

She calls Jonathan at the Hyatt Regency. She tries every hotel in the area where he's supposed to be, but she cannot find him.

She thinks she finds him, but a woman answers the phone. Grace is freaked out until Jonathan answers the phone, and it's not her Jonathan.

She begins to connect the murder with her husband.

The Undoing Season 1 Episode 1 Quotes

I'm not blaming you. I'm just saying that there's a particular type of person that you want to be with, and maybe you're a little too quick to see that person in the men that you meet instead of seeing what's actually there.

Grace

Grace: Rebecca, I have met few people more discriminating than you. You read a hundred Yelp reviews before choosing someone to install your carpet. Am I right? You try on 20 pairs of shoes before making a choice. You do background checks on your hair colorist, you did a background check on me, no doubt. You vet everything. I mean everything. Which is fine. I mean, that's appropriate.
Rebecca: But?
Grace: But an attractive man comes along and shows an interest in you, and judgment be gone.
Rebecca: No, that is not what is happening.
Grace: I mean, the day that you met Kevin, you floated into this office. It was an appointment that was made to deal with the anguish of husband number two, only to declare that you met husband number three, so I'm saying, it's possible, that you're less of a victim of Kevin's moods than you are of your own.
