Recap

Kat is at the paper doing research into Jacob's disappearance.

In the '90s, Alice is with Nick on the beach. Kat, Jacob, and his friend are playing in the sand nearby.

Alice asks Nick how he feels about her. She's not asking that Nick as much as she's asking because furture Nick didn't show. Alice tells Kat Nick is so unreliable and never shows up when he says he will.

Kat screams over to Jacob and Danny to say away from the water. The water is luring Jacob!

Del gets a call that they are holding a vote to bring back the fall carnival. Monica is sensitive to her feelings, but it's time to bring it back.

Rita and Kat aren't thrilled about seeing posters for the carnival all over town.

Elliot is there, too. Byron calls, and when Rita asks if she's putting him off, she goes off. She wants quiet and solitude in her own house. She storms out to find it.

Elliot isn't happy with Kat after what he saw. But she wants to save Jacob and needs his help.

Monica is very excited about the possibility of bringing the carnival back, but it falls on deaf ears. Monica thinks that Del is ripping down her posters. As Del is rolling her eyes, Danny comes in, and Del says hi, assuring him she's not ripping down the posters.

Kat is examining theories and there are plenty, including the mystery of the White Witch, which we know isn't a mystery, thanks to the premiere scene of the series.

Elliot says her obsession isn't healthy, and she says it isn't healthy to forget. Maybe the pond wants her to find Jacob, which is why they can time travel.

Before dinner, Alice asks Kat about Brady and Elliot, and Kat asks about Spencer. When Del arrives, she shares what she learned from Monica about the posters.

Kat recalls Danny as a child being admonished to stay with his mom.

Byron drops by and Del apologizes about the night at the Roxy, but that's not why he's there. He's worried about Kat. Del goes looking for her and finds Kat's crime board, making her visibility upset. She thinks that Kat is still writing the book.

Kat is honed in on the fact that Danny's story kept changing. Del says it was shock, but Kat doesn't agree. If Kat is going to ask Danny questions, then Del is going along. She thinks that Kat will ask cruel, hurtful questions. Not just any journalist would, but Kat would, according to Del.

It's been a month since Alice has been back. The fall carnival is only days away. She asks Elliot to promise to take care of Jacob if she can't get back. She won't tell him why, but he promises.

Kat and Del visit with Danny. Kat lays out all of the conflicting stories and asks him to walk her through it. Del is getting upset at the line of questioning, but Danny finally speaks. He can't get rid of it. All of the people asking questions scared him. He didn't want his parents to know he went to the carnival. He was punished for not doing his chores.

Danny said he threw the stuffed dog he won over the edge of the cliff. Jacob said he'd jump over it to get it, and Danny double dared him. But when Danny saw his parents' car, he ran, leaving Jacob at the edge of the cliff.

Del wants Danny to forgive himself so that they can all move on.

Kat wants Elliot's help. She wants to go back. Alice was there the day that Jacob disappeared. Elliot kept a log of Alice's visits. Jacob gets to the farm just as she and Brady and Jacob are leaving for the carnival. She grabs Jacob's bike. That's how her bike gets to the carnival.

Elliot knows that it's already started and that Alice needs to go back now.

Only when Kat drops the bike does she know that she was always there. Alice gets back to the farm as Elliot is angry that Brady left. Elliot wishes that she had been more specific with what happened.

Coltono is in the dunk tank. Jacob is excited to win a prize. Adult Kat is walking through the park on her way to the ferris wheel. She finds herself, and Jacob's got the prize. Jacob wants to sit by himself on the ferris wheel, which must be how they get separated. Jacob drops his stuffed dog from the ride. He calls to Kat, but Kat is sucking face with Brady.

Kat sees Jacob going after the dog, but she was too far away and loses him again. Kat and Brady wonder where Jacob is, too. When the ride stops and he's not on it, the search begins.

Elliot lashes out at Brady for leaving without him, and Brady says so what. He got left behind. It doesn't matter.

Everyone is looking for Jacob. He's right behind his parents when Danny grabs the dog and they run into the scary tunnel. For some reason, Kat goes in after him rather than wait until they get out.

Alice tries to get Kat to alert her parents, but Brady talks her out of it. When Alice finds out that Jacob ran into the scary house without a ticket, she follows. Because why? Once in there, she sees her mom.

It's dark, and now the whole family is in on the search. Kat is by the cliff. She climbs over the fence to get closer to the cliff's edge. She sees the dog in the water below and thinks she's too late. But then she sees Jacob walking on a nearby path. She asks if he's alright, saying she's Alice's mom.

He doesn't want to find his parents. He just wants to go home, so she offers to walk with him.

Del and Colton are very worried, and they send Kat home so that she can be there if Jacob returns. Kat and Jacob are having a very nice conversation in which he says he and Kat will be partners with him as the photographer and her as the journalist. They reach the house, and she sees him enter the front door. She thought that she and Brady were already inside.

The town meeting is taking place, with residents talking about the carnival. Kat is running through the house, looking for Jacob. Del is speaking about Jacob's disappearance. Nothing has changed.

Del's speech is about honoring the past because you can't change it. They need to vote on the carnival returning because that's the best and bravest way forward.

We see that someone found Jacob's stuffed dog on the beach and they give it to Colton who takes the boat into the water.

Kat is sobbing that she couldn't save Jacob, and she really tried.

Colton returns to the dock, telling Del that Jacob is gone.

Kat and Elliot are together when Alice returns, and when Kat reveals that she was there, Alice is upset, wondering how long they've been lying to her.

The Way Home Season 1 Episode 6 Quotes

And then, there's the mystery of Jacob's bike. Brady drove me and Jacob to the carnival, so how did his bike wind up at the carnival entrance? No one has been able to figure it out, so I have to.

Kat

Kat: OK, so I've been piecing things together, just figuring out the timelines. There's an answer here. I know it. So, there's two prevailing theories here. One was that Jacob was taken; he was kidnapped. And then the other is that he fell into the ocean from the cliff, but I have to consider all of the possibilities, even the weird ones, like the white witch theory.
Elliot: That's insane.
Kat: I know, but local lore exists for a reason.
