Finally getting to see more of Rebecca's love life outside of Jack, we watch her try speed dating, where she runs into an old PTA acquaintance, Matt. They have a successful coffee date, Rebecca returning home giddy and grinning, but Kate struggles with seeing her mom move on, causing her to lash out. Throughout the episode, Rebecca and Kate's relationship is at the forefront, from childhood to adulthood, piano the thread keeping them together. Music can also keep Rebecca's mind sharp. Kate's request that she teach Jack how to play the piano is one that can give her something productive to do as her memory worsens. Meanwhile, Kevin goes to spend the weekend at the cabin with Nicky, Edie, and Cassidy. He tries to hold Cassidy's hand, which proves Randall's theory that he's a bit of an unlikely serial monogamist. He leans into his softer side by calling Eli to give him advice about how to handle Madison's eating disorder, a purely selfless message. The biggest drama occurs over a not-so-nice family dinner. Deja clues Randall and Beth into her plans to graduate from high school early and move to Boston to live with Malik. This goes over so poorly that Randall asks Malik to break up with Deja, with which Beth disagrees, sure it will drive Deja away.
