In 1997, Beth's mother is critical of Beth's fear of horses as they ride. Her mother's horse rears, knocking her mother off. She insists Beth be the one to go for help even though Kayce is a faster rider because "she did this".

Beth lets her horse go by itself and runs through the field, sobbing too hard to say what happened. John sends her home with Lee and goes searching for his wife. Kayce gets scared as John approaches and pulls out a knife.

In the present, the governor has apparently slept with John. She thinks Jamie should run as an independent. He disagrees. She shows up in a rober and John yells at her to take it off. It was his wife's.

Jamie is arguing with a guy on the phone who is angry that the ME is dead and his place burned down. Jamie insists John had nothing to do with it. The conversation gets cut short by a drunk Beth wandering into view. Jamie hangs up and tries to stop her from getting into a bathtub that appaears to have electric wires in it. She gets in anyway and tells him that today is the day their mother died.

John is drinking too and looking sad.

Beth sees the governor leave. Rip gives someone a horse to tie up and approaches. Beth is hostile. Rip tells her she has to go in the house. She won't let him cover her with a jacket, saying everyone suffers today, even him.

Tate is upset while on the shooting range with Kayce. In the truck, he tells Kayce he doesn't want him to go to the army. They are interrupted by Kayce spotting a white van that he thinks is trouble. Kayce tells Tate to stay in the car. He takes his gun and a man with a gas mask jumps out and tries to shoot him. Kayce tells Tate to be a big b oy and stay hidden in a large pipe while he goes after the bad guys. He takes off with the truck.

There is a snake in the pipe. Tate tries to fight it off while Kayce chases the driver of the white van with a gun and a lasso.

Kayce finds an indigenous girl tied up with duct tape. He releases her. She says she's okay and she's glad he killed the men who did it.

Kayce and the girl return to Tate, who has killed the sanke and says he beat it to biting him. Kayce wants to take the girl to the police but she refuses. They take her home and Kayce tells Tate to wait in the truck while he talks to her family about what to do.

Jamie can't get someone on the phone to agree to what he wants. John takes the phone and intimidates her and gets it done. Jamie wants to run for Attorney General. John says he'll think about it.

Rainwater is preparing for some major gala, wearing a tuxedo and practicing a speech. On the way there he is pulled over and arrested by local police for no apparent reason. He offers no resistance as they order him out of the car and onto his knees.

At the jail, the cops lie and say Rainwater was combative. He's searched and locked up. John comes to see him and says he'll be in prison until he returns the cattle. Rainwater says he plans to buy back all the land stolen from his people, starting with John's ranch, and erase all signs John's family ever existed.

The girl's father tells Kayce that she doesn't want anyone tok now. He says that no one cares when his people die but everyone cares when white men do. He wants Kayce to help him get rid of the bodies.

Kayce brings Tate home but has to take care of hiding the bodies of the perpetrators. He won't tell Monica what's going on but says it's only because he doesn't have time now.

Beth is watching Rip and some cowboys admiringly. John asks to talk to her. She asks him why he slept with the Governor on the anniversary of her mother's death. He says because he wanted to forget. He wants Beth to run for assembly.

Beth and Jamie get into it after Beth reluctantly agrees to run for Assembly. Jamie accuses her of killing their mother and she punches him. WHen he punches back after a while she says a real man would have walked away.

Jamie tells John that Beth will kill them all. John tells Jamie to stop grabbing tigers by the tail. Jamie decides he's running for Attorney General with or without John's permission.

Dan the developer thinks seducing Beth is a good idea and won't listen to his friends. Beth says she's going to break him and his entire family.

Kayce and the girl's father dig a hole. The girl's father says now they burn the bodies so their souls will be trapped. He wants Kayce to do the honors.

John has a talk with Jimmy about how the death of his wife has killed the family.

Rainwater blinks first; John gets a delivery of cattle, and Rainwater gets to put his good clothes back on and ride in the back of a car somewhere.

Kayce is riding a horse and talking to one of Monica's other relatives. A gunshot comes from in the house. The man screams at the children to stay outside. Kayce and the man run in, but it's too late—Monica's sister-in-law has killed herself. Kayce leaves the house and stares into the eyes of her five children.
