Enjoy the TV Fanatic staff picks for best finales of 2014 – mid-season and season.

1. The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Finale

The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Finale
Last year's TVD Season 5 finale was actually awesome. After a completely awful season, they pulled it together for the finale. Stefan was dead in the penultimate episode so that left the stakes high, the other side was collapsing, Liv and Bonnie did some work and got everyone back including ALARIC, everyone that is except for Damon and Bonnie. And when the lights blinked out with Damon and Bonnie holding hands, mid-sentence I was totally freaking out.

2. How to Get Away with Murder Season 1 Midseason Finale

How to Get Away with Murder Season 1 Midseason Finale
Midseason How to Get Away With Murder had enough drama for an entire first season. We finally saw the night of the bonfire take shape. We found out who killed Sam, more about Lila, and best of all- Annalise ended up being in on the whole coverup. Seeing her sitting in the dark when Wes went back for the trophy was a jaw-dropping moment.

3. Silicon Valley Season 1 Finale

Silicon Valley Season 1 Finale
Silicon Valley's season finale not only raised the stakes for Richard and his team, but the bar was raised on the humor front with two supremely hilarious gags: The world;s most mathematically complex masturbation joke to date and Zach Woods landing himself in jail through his desperate attempts to rebrand the company.

4. House of Cards Season 2 Finale

House of Cards Season 2 Finale
After swearing to take revenge on those who caused him to be passed on for secretary of state , Frank Underwood achieved his goal, and went one step further to become president. After all the political carnage and actual death that took place, no one can forget Kevin Spacey staring straight into the screen and knocking on the table in triumph.

5. Bates Motel Season 2 Finale

Bates Motel Season 2 Finale
This finale will always be remembered for THAT kiss between Norma and Norman, but there were some many other awesome things that took place. There was the partnership of Dylan and Romero, the amazing Norma and Dylan reunion and that closing shot of Freddie Highmore looking into the camera. Is it time for season 3 yet?!?!

6. Sons of Anarchy Season 7 Finale

Sons of Anarchy Season 7 Finale
In the last episode of Kurt Sutter's Hamlet inspired biker tragedy, the story came to a satisfying end. Before the curtain fell on this show, the mother had paid for her sins against her son. In an ironic fashion, Jax went out the same way that his father did. In the end, fans were left to wonder whether Jax's son Abel would be free from the life of his father. One thing fans know for sure, the crow certainly flies straight.

7. Parks and Recreation Season 6 Finale

Parks and Recreation Season 6 Finale
Parks and Recreation Season 6 Featuring an unexpected three-year time jump, this season finale felt more like a series finale. The show completely skipped over the birth of Leslie and Ben's triplets and showed Leslie three whole years after receiving her promotion. While it has been confirmed that the next season will be the last, the possibilities for the material are pretty endless.

8. The Walking Dead Season 4 Finale

The Walking Dead Season 4 Finale
While The Walking Dead certainly has a tendency to be slow, this episode contained one of the many shocking scenes that this show has become known for. It was looking like Rick was going to lose a fight to the death and his son Carl, he turned it around by biting his enemies neck and killing him. Shortly after, Rick was a tough situation again after being trapped by cannibals. Little did they know that they were "screwing with the wrong people."

9. Supernatural Season 10 Midseason Finale

Supernatural Season 10 Midseason Finale
I loved the moment where we saw Dean trying to fight the urge of the dreaded mark of Cain, but unfortunately our hunter gave in to the mark and murdered humans. It was a moment where your heart broke for this character that has tried to do the right thing and you are left with a lot of questions about what is going to happen in the second part of the season.

10. Criminal Minds Season 9 Finale

Criminal Minds Season 9 Finale
The season finale for Criminal Minds Season 9 was exciting and amazing. It took the BAU a bit of time to realize they were surrounded by a corrupt police department, and they couldn't trust anyone. Plus, there were two attempts on Reid's life as he was in the hospital trying to recuperate from a gunshot wound. The normally gentle Garcia had to save him both times. The second time she actually had to shoot the assassin who had tried to poison Reid's intravenus.

11. Archer Season 5 Finale

Archer Season 5 Finale
We had explanations, plot twists, babies, plot twists. First we found out that the whole drug cartel scheme was hatched by Mallory and the CIA. Then there was the biggest bomb of all -- that the father of Lana's baby was Sterling Archer itself. The season finale left us all excited and anticipatory for what's next with this crazy group.

12. Hannibal Season 2 Finale

Hannibal Season 2 Finale
Hannibal: The season finale that left us all rocking ourselves in the fetal position. First of all -- Abigail was alive!! Then Hannibal Lecter left every main character bleeding and broken -- including Abigail -- in his house as he calmly sauntered off into the night, only for us to find out in the last few seconds that Bedelia was his accomplice. For goodness sake, somebody help Will Graham!

13. The Mentalist Season 6 Finale

The Mentalist Season 6 Finale
With Red John dead, everyone wondered what was left to tell on The Mentalist but season 6 proved there was plenty of story left, especially between Jane and Lisbon. When Lisbon decided to move to Washington D.C. with new boyfriend Marcus Pike, Jane tried to trick her into staying. When that blew up in his face he was left with the one thing he'd never tried, the truth. There wasn't a dry eye on the plane when Jane forced his way on board only to tell Lisbon that he loved her. Fans were even more thrilled when she returned the next morning to tell him she felt the same. It all led to the couple's first real kiss and a fantastic set up for the final season of The Mentalist.
