What is Wrong with Izzie Stevens?

at . Comments

We're all wondering it, and E! Online has put together a list of theories and possible (using the term loosely, of course) explanations for Season Five's most intriguing plot line: Izzie's "visions" (and more) of Denny Duquette, her fiance who bought the farm in Season Two.

Which do you think is best? Do you have your own? Comment below ...

Izzie Stevens, Denny Duquette

Theory #1: Izzie Has a Brain Tumor

Evidence: Symptoms of a brain tumor include: inability to concentrate (check), gradual changes in intellectual or emotional capacity (check), lethargy (check), changes in behavior or personality (check), and/or hallucinations (check).

Verdict: Debunked... or so we think. Shonda Rhimes told TV Guide's Michael Ausiello, "I think the love triangle with Denny, Izzie and Alex is among the most interesting we've ever done. Watching the chemistry between Jeffrey and Katherine again has been really touching. I can't wait for our viewers to see where we're taking it. But what it won't involve is Izzie having a brain tumor." Okay ... unless Shonda is just trying to throw us all off.

Theory #2: Izzie Is Losing Her Mind

Evidence: She is having hallucinations of her dead fiancé. Active, ongoing hallucinations where they have tons of sweaty sex and he incessantly follows her around. If it looks crazy, sounds crazy and smells crazy, it probably is crazy. Even the Seattle Grace nurses have blogged that she's out of her right mind: "Izzie Stevens has lost it. I mean it. She's gone... I hope things get better for her because it looks like Izzie can't take one more bad thing happening ..." Could the nurses know more than we think they know?

Verdict: Izzie could very well be on the verge of a nervous breakdown, which could definitely have implications for her relationship with Alex. His mom was nuts, and Ava (Elizabeth Reaser) had a devastating breakdown of her own last year - a situation, it's worth noting, that Izzie helped Alex endure.

All this does beg the question, though: Why is Alex so crazy-making? Is he just too hot? Does his pure sexual energy fry the brain?

Theory #3: Izzie Is Dead, Too

Evidence: We all saw The Sixth Sense. Everything is going right for Izzie, other than seeing her dead ex-fiancé. She has roommates who love her, boy toy Alex (Justin Chambers), who finally wants to be with her, and a job she loves, despite the fact she stole a heart... Is it possible that it's all just a happy limbo where Izzie has dwelt since she killed herself after Denny's first demise?

Verdict: As far as the rest of the characters are concerned, Izzie is alive and well, but who knows? And Mer has communed with dead Denny, dead Dylan and dead mom Ellis.

Theory #4: Izzie Has Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Evidence: The girl is way too busy fighting for surgeries to even take a moment to deal with the loss of her fiancé. This has happened once before, when Izzie was too active being an underwear model to face the emotional reality of putting her daughter up for adoption.

Verdict: Izzie's own best theory on what's happening to her is a delayed grief experience, and who's to say the doctor can't diagnose herself...

Theory #5: Izzie Has an Overactive Imagination

Evidence: Plain and simple, sex with a dead man is not possible, even if it is... fulfilling. Co-executive producer Joan Rater said on the Grey's Anatomy Writers' Blog: "Izzie knows this isn't real, she knows that, but it feels real and she just ... closes her eyes and, you heard the sounds coming from the room, as Meredith said, it sounded kinda porny, so whatever's going on with the dead guy, the sex is good, at least ..."

Verdict: If this is the love story the writers were hinting at for Katherine Heigl ... she's essentially having a love story with herself, and that's not healthy.

They shouldn't kill off Izzie Stevens - she's too beautiful to leave out. She makes the show worth watching - the writers should keep her on. I, for one, will lose interest if she goes.

I believe that Izzie has malignant melanoma with metastases to the brain.

first of all, sorry for my english.
izzie has definitely some sort of brain problem, that is why she saw denny and could touch him. also, sadie leaves because she can't make correct diagnosis in the medical game that izzie created, so if i had to guess i'd say that the tests that she made on izzie when she said she was anemic were in fact a misdiagnosis and izzie has a much more serious brain disease. mcdreamy is probably going to operate her but he will be afraid because of the problems i believe he will have with his preagnent patient.
i guess we'll have to see, but this denny stuff was definitely ruining the series. enough of denny.

I wonder if she could have temporal lobe epilepsy?

I deduce...Izzie Stevens is schizophrenic. We all know it is braing related; Shonda Rymes says it is not a brain tumor, but similar to an aneurysm.
1. Schizophrenia can occur after a traumatic event (i.e. Denny showed up when the man who was supposed to get Denny's heart ended up at Seattle Grace).
2. Schizophrenia can cause hallucinations (i.e. Denny).
3. Schizophrenia is believed to be caused by high levels of dopamine ( a chemical in the brain which transmits info from cell to cell and is associated with feelings of pleasure such as SEX - hellooooooo!!!!)
Izzie has gone crazy! Poor Alex, can't catch a break.

she is sick. i dnt no wt with but she is ill. thts y deny kept saying im here for you. he didnt mean im here to look after her he was there to help her thru her being ill and watch over her as she was ill and to try warn her. its not a stupid stroy line or unrelistic as there are many medical illnesses that result in hallucinations or such type things they are just trying to show us what she is seeing

Katherine Heigl said she wanted to be killed off sometime during Grey's Anatomy, i think this is where it's heading.
Yeah , it's a little far-fetched plot, but always remember that Shonda doesn't just go overboard like that without a good explanation. Just watch and wait geeze. On another note, i believe Grey's Anatomy started to tilt a bit downhill after Addison n Burke left. :(

the story line with izzie is getting really annoying and insipid...they need to end it already....or make her have a real life illness and FAST

i think izzy is so in love that they are connected here ant the there after .i think its beautiful and makes one have a deep faith in divine love .

I think tht maybe Kathreine Heigle pissed of fthe writers an dthey are gonna cut her character so they are making her go crazy?? just a thought! I mean they do write her script

Grey's Anatomy Quotes

Did you say it? 'I love you. I don't ever want to live without you. You changed my life.' Did you say it? Make a plan. Set a goal. Work toward it, but every now and then, look around; Drink it in 'cause this is it. It might all be gone tomorrow."

Meredith (closing voiceover)

Burke was- He took something from me. He took little pieces of me, little pieces over time, so small I didn't even notice, you know? He wanted me to be something I wasn't, and I made myself into what he wanted. One day I was me Cristina Yang, and then suddenly I was lying for him, and jeopardizing my career, and agreeing to be married and wearing a ring, and being a bride. Until I was standing there in a wedding dress with no eyebrows, and I wasn't Cristina Yang anymore. And even then, I would've married him. I would have. I lost myself for a long time. And now that I'm finally me again, I can't. I love you. I love you more than I loved Burke. I love you. And that scares the crap out of me because when you asked me to ignore Teddy's page, you took a piece of me, and I let you. And that will never happen again.
