Patrick Dempsey Not Leaving Grey's Anatomy

TV Guide Canada refutes rumors spreading around the Internet that Patrick Dempsey was among the Grey's Anatomy cast members said to be looking to leave the show.

As if.

However, after his character, Dr. Derek Shepherd, had to deal with the loss of patient Jen [played by Jennifer Westfeldt], the final straw comes when the doctor known as McDreamy learns at a deposition that more of his patients have died than survived.

Chief and Der

That sends the depressed surgeon over the edge, and Derek decides to quit Seattle Grace. While some subsequent headlines would have you believe Patrick Dempsey is leaving not just Seattle Grace, but the show itself, the actor just laughs it off.

“Derek goes off on a little bit of a soul-searching bender, and then comes out the other side with the help of his fellow surgeons,” reveals Dempsey. “My character does leave the hospital, but I’m not leaving the series. I’d be stupid to leave.”

Phew.

Phew...i once believed about the rumor. But 1 think 4 sure,SGH was hiring him for reasons. He must be some1 that good in his field -back to NY- and he proof it through the critical trial. If he was in his crisis right now, just fine! Give us some facts that 1st neurosergeon just also human. Just love DS even more...

It never really went through my mind that PD would actually want to leave. Glad to know that it isn't happening though.

PJ, in addition to what anika said, Derek has pulled some hard procedures and tough surgeries too that add to the recognition. Remember the one with the woman who had a fork stuck in her neck/almost shoulder? I vaguely recall that that surgery had been done only a handful of times.

Also, correct me if I'm not wrong, but didn't Derek used to work in a Private Practice in NYC? I mean, in there he would've done much less surgeries than in a hospital with the magnitude of SGH. That could also lead to a difference of his mortality rate. Just a thought.

It's good to see a layer more of Derek, especially on his dark and twisty side. Mer is an expert on that one so she should be able to help him through.

    Is it March 12th yet?

PS. Does someone think that it's a little weird that we haven't seen a promo yet? The episode is next week after all...maybe we'll get

does anyonee think that stupid cmnt had anything to do with KH? i knew PD wouldnt leave but i dont want DEREK to quit!! he wouldnt be him

leaving greys would be the dumbest thing he would do. he is not going to because it is the way he makes money when not doing any movies. his movies are good patrick brings in alot of ratings and fans for the show. without patrick ratings would go down and greys would be cancelled.

    "I'd be stupid to leave."

    What an understatement, haha...

Not to mention that the show would be pointless to watch ;)

(And with his reputation as a neurosurgeon, he most likely operated on patients who had a very grim outlook to begin with... losing patients who no one else would/could operate on probably skews his numbers a bit)

I never believed PD would leave the show. I'm looking forward to see his crisis, Derek depressed would be something! And to see how he will get trough it!

PJ about your question, from what I understood the deposition will state that more patients died in SGH. He was already a world renown neurosurgeon when he moved to Seattle, so he must had done pretty great things in NY. And don't forget the clinical trial, he created a new technique to save patiens. Only few surgeons in the world do that ;)
