Should Meredith Help Thatcher?

If you've seen the promos for this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy, you know Meredith Grey has an impossibly difficult problem on her hands. Her father, Thatcher, who saddled her with abandonment issues and made her dark and twisty for decades, needs a transplant.

It looks like Lexie is not a match, but Mer is. She could be his last hope.

Should Meredith help Thatcher, her estranged father, who returns to Seattle Grace? Should she do as Lexie pleads, and give her her dad? Or, as Derek says, does she really not owe Thatcher anything after all the misery he's caused her?

Mer, Lexie and Thatcher

Good job on providing all this forum for us fans!!

    Thanks,
    Ben

Well the problem is that Thatcher may not be her "father" but her is a great father to Lexie and Molly. He's a grandfather to Laura and he's all thats left for the Grey Family. I hope she does it for Lexie

I dont think she should... but she will... thatcher reminds me of my dad.. he was abusive and paid no attention to his family.. when he was dying he was in a comma. now dad hated the catholics and seeing as i was catholic i had a priest give him last rights. half way thru he came out just long enough to know what was going on.. i hten had him buried from the catholic church and had his grave blessed with holy water....anyway thatcher reminds me to much of my dad and he doesnt deserve the liver from mer...let him go on a transplanrt list and take his chances....

Meredith should do this. Because she's whole and healed and together and married and starting her own life. Because she's grown up. Because she's a bigger person than her father ever was or may ever be. Because she's stronger.

Lexie may have been wrong to ask Mer to do the surgery, but like she said, the only Dad she's ever known was kind and caring and present. She loves her father and wants to save him, it just turns out that Mer's the only one who can do that.

And yes, Thatcher hit her and left her and never tried to be there for her. Yes, he's a terrible father on those accounts, and many others, but he doesn't deserve to die because of that.

So, even though I really hate Thatcher and never want him on this show ever again, I think Meredith should do the surgery. Not because it gives Ellen leave for her baby or because it's the perfect revenge, but because it's the right thing to do. This is going to be interesting.

I actually think she should do it, not for Thatcher but because she's a much bigger person than that. She may not owe him anything but Mer knows that she'll never forgive herself if he dies.
She should do it for herself, to actually get some closure from all that parent issues that have been haunting her since the first season.
I really want to see Mark and Derek on Mer's side and not on Lexie's. I really dislike her for asking Mer to do it for her. She should understand why Mer doesn't want to do it--because Thatcher was a horrible father who left a child with an unstable mother.

i personally dont want her to do it but even if she dosnt owe thatcher or lexie anything she is a doctor and as a doctor it is her job to save people not to kill them so she will only do becuase she has to, she has an obligation as a doctor to save him even if it was a complete stranger it is her job and will to do, so she will and meredith being meredith will hid it out and end up having cristina shouting at her telling that she to do not for lexie not for her farther but for the job she loves ever so much

I am sure this plot line is to cover Ellen's preganancy and maternity leave. Ellen isn't in any of the spoiler pics out there after this episode. It'll be great to at least see Mer appearing in all the episodes if what I read from Kirsta is true.

I agree that Mer owes nothing to Thatch, he stopped being a father to her when he left when she was five years old. But Mer is whole and healed with regards to her mom. Cos of that she was able to commit to a life Der. The chief finally acknowledged his part in the neglect that Mer experienced in her childhood, and she forgave him.

But that apology Thatch gave to Mer and Lex was inadequate for what he owed Mer. If he gets a small section of Mer's liver and survives, he will have to rethink any attitude he has to his eldest daughter. More storylines for the writers.

From what I read, a living donor can donate some of their liver and evidently a liver regrows, which I find amazing

While Thatcher was wrong while he was a drunk.....

His FIRST wife, Ellis, had an affair for several years. She pushed him & Meredith away and treated him & Meredith horribly.

He moved on to start a life, showing he was capable of loving someone, and lost his second wife.

He's been through a lot, and was pushed around by a strong woman who didn't care about him and was damanged, much like Meredith.

While that doesn't excuse his actions, he's not a horrible individual. Meredith doesn't owe him anything, but he hasn't had an easy as pie life either.

Of course, she should say yes ! How is she suppose to go on with her life with the guilt of not saving him ? And, whether you like it or not, he's still her father. And he remembered about the swing chair at the Grey's house, she snores because of him. I think that's Ellis who destroyed him.
I'm not saying he's been a good father to Meredith. Because he's not. And nothing can change that. But he's here, and she can't ignore that, like PJ couldn't ignore his father dying next to him in "There's no I in team".
It's a difficult situation and she doesn't owe him anything. She could do it and still will never owe him anything.

Is it even possible to donate your liver?
I think she should help her father. Melody's right, if she showed compassion for the serial killer it is weird if she can't show some for her father (I know he's an ass)
