Grey's Anatomy Season Premiere Review: "With You I'm Born Again"

at . Comments

Okay! So we were all anticipating and wondering how Shonda Rhimes would bring back our beloved surgeons from such a traumatic season finale and I must say, I think she did a pretty decent job with last night's episode, "With You I'm Born Again."

Obviously, you can tell that Lexie is not the only one who is dealing with PTSD and from all the flashbacks that we saw, it looks like every one of our Seattle docs are.

The only doc that had me laughing and smiling was Chief Weber. Hail to the Chief! Boy! That man has moves! I loved every second of him doing his victory dance.

It was also pretty cute having Meredith be the one to find him. It really solidifies the father-daughter bond that I see growing between them.

Dr. Perkins is the new doc in town trying to figure out who's ready to go back to work and who isn't. By the looks of it, he is not on Meredith's favorite people list.

One by one each doctor recounts what transpired during and after the mass murder. Here is a brief summary for each of our main characters:

  • Bailey is still trying to hold everything in her life together with "tape and glue" so she finally confronts her budding romance with Ben and tells him it's just not the right timing.
  • Alex decides to keep the bullet that is lodged inside of him to pick up chicks. He breaks up with Lexie because he can't deal with another crazy chick.
  • Lexie is the most obvious person dealing with PTSD. Sloan commits her and Dr. Perkins releases her back to her job after a good night's rest (or three).
  • Cristina and Owen decide to marry each other. After her meeting with Dr. Perkins, she realizes that she just wants to be a simple woman because no one ever shoots a simple woman.
  • Derek quits his job as chief and gets arrested a bunch of times for speeding. He feels guilty because it was him who the shooter was after.
  • Meredith has yet to tell Derek about the miscarriage. She knows that this is something that could really put Derek (and herself) over the edge, but still wont say anything.
  • Arizona is freaked out that Callie wants to start trying to have a baby, but all she really wants is Arizona to move in permanently. Arizona is overjoyed.
  • Jackson and April are still just trying to fit in.

Because of all the flashbacks of what transpired in last season's finale, I know these issues are just the tip of the iceberg for all of the characters. Something big will have to hit in order for them to move past the experience and work in the same environment again.

One really great part of last night's episode had to be Lexie telling off Alex when she said: "You think that you're so bad ass because you lived, but I'm the reason why you lived. And while you were dying you were crying out for the wife who left you. So that's the opposite of bad ass for whatever it's worth."

I wanted to get inside the TV and give her a high five! Last season I was kind of rooting for them to make it, but after the way he decided to treat her, I am SO over them.

Alex will always be the asshole guy with all the excuses why he's an asshole, but I'm just so over it! He needs a woman in his life that will help him man up. Do you think that woman could be Lexie? Or do you think Lexie and Sloan are MFEO?

All in all, I was pretty happy with the layout Shondra put together for the season premiere. I for one, can't wait to see what's in store for us this season!

Until next week, here are a few of my favorite Grey's Anatomy quotes from last night ...

Cristina: I think your either born simple or you're not. I want to be the person who gets happy over finding the perfect dress. I want to be simple because no one holds a gun to the head of a simple girl. | permalink
Alex: You look hot. The whole crazy eyes, tight dress thing is working for you for whatever it's for.
Lexie: You think that you're so bad ass because you lived, but I'm the reason why you lived. And while you were dying you were crying out for the wife who left you. So that's the opposite of bad ass for whatever it's worth. | permalink
Cristina: I never gave you any crap about your post-it.
Meredith: You look beautiful.
Cristina: I know. How's Owen? Is he good?
Meredith: Owen's perfect. He's perfect.
Cristina: Thank you. | permalink
Derek: (to Dr. Perkins) Life is short. So now I think less and just do. | permalink
Meredith: You're driving awfully fast Dr. Sheppard. Least you could do is wear a seat belt. | permalink
Owen: That was quite a show this morning.
Derek: I didn't plan it.
Owen: That made it even better. Any regrets?
Derek: No, any regrets to proposing to Cristina?
Owen: None.
Derek: Getting shot turns out to not be the worst thing after all.
Owen: I need a best man. I know I know we're not that close, but I don't know, you being married to the other twisted sister I just thought it makes us brothers or something.
Derek: I'd be honored. It's an honor.
Owen: Thank you.
Derek: You need a bachelor party?
Owen: No.
Derek: Even better. | permalink
Callie: Welcome back Doctor Sheppard.
Derek: Thank you Doctor Torres. | permalink
Derek: The truth is I hate being chief. Chief Webber is our chief. | permalink
Cristina: I'm not wearing white - its sexist and vaguely racist. | permalink
Meredith: Every cell in the human body regenerates on average every seven years. Like snakes, in our own way we shed our skin. Biologically we are brand new people. We may look the same, we probably do, the change isn't visible at least in most of us, but we are all changed completely forever. | permalink

I hope there's a follow up about the kid whose surgery was so radical. I'd like to see him recovered and restored, not that god-awful agony. And I still have not seen Tyler, my favorite nurse.

Can I ask a question to someone from the editors of tvfanatic? there won't be a round table for the premiere or the other episodes of grey's anatomy?

This episode was soooooooooooooooo boring!:P

I thought it was pretty good but I was disappointed in the writing for Derek (Patrick Dempsey). Three scenes of him speeding, which two looked like the same scenes, was a bit too much. I didn't like the flashback scene with him in the hospital with April sitting at his bedside. We didn't get a scene with him and Meredith at his bedside in the finale which was surely absent. Then in the opener the scene is with April??? I guess they had to put her in somewhere. That scene should have been reserved for Meredith. She might be understanding him more if he had told Meredith about feeling guilty that all those people being shot and feeling responsible for it. Then the scene where Derek quits being Chief was really bad, not because of the actors but because of poor writing. There are so many great scenarios that could have been with Derek handing back the reins to the Chief, really touching scenes that would have been great with the both of them but another opportunity lost with bad writing. Much of the writing for Derek as Chief last year was really bad, things that would have been totally out of his character's personality and capability as head of neurosurgery. It's like they wanted to tear down the character, when they could have used the opportunity of having scenes being good at it but recognizing he just didn't like it, maybe helping the Chief come through a really bad time. I just didn't like the way they made Derek out. Then after a shooting, where is Derek's family? He has said and members of his family have been there for less circumstances. They really had great storylines they could have used after the shooting for many of the characters that they didn't take advantage of but then they rush in a wedding of Christina and Owen. I'm not a writer but I really think missed opportunities. There were some great scenes, the Chief dancing, Bailey's scenes who I think often gets good writing, Meredith being strong but yet holding allot back. I'm just a little disappointed. But I love all the actors and they do the best they can with what is given to them and they don't complain, at least publicly.

I loved the season premiere.
I didn't really like last season, and many of the characters got on my nerves, but now it seems they're back.
I'm especially starting to enjoy Lexie. I never thought much if her but now I think she is one of the most interesting and likeable docs. However, I don't like her with either Alex or Mark. I think her and Jackson would look cute together...
Also the writers did a great job of letting Meredith grow without changing her completely.
The Owen-Teddy scene was nice as well, and the Chief rocks anyway ;)

Cristina's simple girl dialogue was just amazing. It really showed how much she has been impacted by the events. She was a "do-er" in season 2 who wouldn't leave Meredith with a bomb and here she is trying to hide behind everything to feel safe. Such a 180 degree for her character. Sandra Oh is truly talented!

First: Hope there will still be round tables, love them! Second: One of my favorite quotes is from Dr. Bailey. Bailey: On the day I gave birth to my son, my husband had a carcrash and he nedded a craniotomy and he almost died on Derek Shepard's table. That was a perticularly difficult day. Now at the end of that day my son was born and my husband lived. But at the end of this day, the um... um... this day was the worst day of my life.

My favorite part was when Mer tells Cristina that Derek might be the love of her life but she is her soul mate.....That was really nice.....I just love these two.

Look, Alex and Lexie were both right and wrong. Alex has had his share of crazy, from his mum to Ava/Rebecca to Izzie, then he gets shot and his girlfirend briefly loses her mind. I can see why he would walk away. It's not right, but I get it. Lexie, being the one who pulled the plug on Mr. Clark's wife, feels responsible for the shooting of 18 people (11 of whom died) including her boyfriend, her sister's husband, her sister's best-friend's boyfriend and two fellow residents! And to top that all off, Alex abandons her when she needs him the most. While Lexie herself may not have been shot, I would bet the pain from her psychological wounds will run far deeper and last far longer than Alex's physical wounds. So what's a girl to do with all of this damage? Well, either you give up and let it consume you, or if you're Lexie, you reach deep inside and you dig up that strength you never knew you had. You shield yourself and you fight back. So when Alex mocks her with the "crazy eyes tight dress comment", I for one am glad that Lexie doesn't shrink into her pain but gives as good as she gets. Granted, it was below the belt but Alex was asking for it. As for Cristina, man, I don't even recognise her, she has simply disappeared. But that was the point I suppose. Overall I thought the premiere was pretty good. It could have done with a bit more depth though; I felt we were skipping along pretty fast, glossing over here and there, but it was a solid effort in the end. And Lexie Grey was the stand-out; for me, her metamorphosis was the most engaging. Kudos to Krista Vernoff as always for some great writing.

I was really glad that Owen's mom was at the wedding! I don't know why that was so important to me, but it was! :)

Grey's Anatomy Season 7 Episode 1 Quotes

When we say things like "people don't change" it drives scientist crazy because change is literally the only constant in all of science. Energy. Matter. It's always changing, morphing, merging, growing, dying. It's the way people try not to change that's unnatural. The way we cling to what things were instead of letting things be what they are. The way we cling to old memories instead of forming new ones. The way we insist on believing despite every scientific indication that anything in this lifetime is permanent. Change is constant. How we experience change that's up to us. It can feel like death or it can feel like a second chance at life. If we open our fingers, loosen our grips, go with it, it can feel like pure adrenaline. Like at any moment we can have another chance at life. Like at any moment, we can be born all over again.

He's fine, we're all coming back to work today (pause - Meredith is thinking about Derek getting shot) - we are all fine.
